Valeo clutch & Gearbox replacement

Hi
Just bought another Stilo (1.4 3dr manual transmission, 2005 year). Needs a clutch seemingly and I see that Europarts are doing a Valeo 3 piece kit for 68 - looking to see if the forum guys would consider Valeo to be a decent enough brand?
Cheers.

re: Valeo clutch & Gearbox replacement

think it would be ok not exactly putting it in a sports car. -- put weekend145 as discount code into car parts for less ( same company as ECP ) and the price comes down to 58.38 free delivery seems a decent price to me.

Valeo are original equipment manufacturers of clutches (and other parts) for Fiat. I've recently bought a genuine Fiat 2 piece clutch kit for one of my JTDs. It's in Fiat packaging, but both parts inside the box are marked Valeo.

68 seems very cheap for a 3 part kit. There's a lot of fake Valeo parts being sold. I wouldn't think Europarts would be party to that though.

Thanks guys. Valeo sounds like it will be fine then and as is mentioned even cheaper at Carparts4less. I've worked out that if i get the clutch kit and 2 x 1 litre gearbox oil from C4less it would be not much more than half the cost of these parts as supplied by our garage last time they did the clutch on our other Stilo (same model) a few years back. At that time it was also 5 hours labour which if the same would give an all in cost of less than 300, which is pretty good, I think?? And kind of reflects that I've always found the wee Stilo to be cheap for parts and (this model at least) pretty straightforward to work on so that I'm able to do diy but doesn't cost a fortune in labour for the stuff which i need to get the garage to do. Hence the reason for adding this second Stilo as a sort of family "pool" car (not to mention that i have always found it quite a good car to drive- despite the motoring press's views and popular wisdom - even in this spec, it's comfortable for me and they seem to be, to put it bluntly, resilient wee buggers - ours just seems to keep going, we've had her since new and never let us down).
Cheers

re: Valeo clutch & Gearbox replacement

Valeo is about as good a clutch as you can get. They had a bit of a wobble with quality a few years ago, when more parts started to be made in Slovenia and Turkey etc.. but they seem to have got on top of it again.

If you don't like Valeo, you can try AP Lockheed, Borg & Beck or Luk.. although these last two are allegedly more "grabby" compared to Valeo.

Hi folks.
Just got this Stilo delivered and have to say that for the (very little) money I paid, very happy with it, far from perfect of course, but pretty reasonable all round, everything works and no fault or warning lights showing, decent tyres and nearly a full tank of petrol .........
As for the clutch, just wanted to get the views please of those more knowledgeable than me before i put her into the workshop. Symptoms are: clutch pedal goes up and down as normal (maybe a bit lighter than our other Stilo, but not overly so); gearstick snicks easily into all gears but when in gear and i let the clutch up (as you would do when pulling away) ......... nothing happens, no noises, nothing. Is this symptoms of a failed clutch?
Thanks very much in advance for any comments.
Cheers.

re: Valeo clutch & Gearbox replacement

Hi guys
Anyone have any thoughts on this? It's like the clutch pedal and gearshift work as normal but try to pull away in first gear and its like it's still in neutral.
Cheers.

Normal symptoms of a completely worn out clutch.

re: Valeo clutch & Gearbox replacement

Thanks Davren. Must admit never had a clutch go to that extent so wasn't entirely sure. But that's a relief- something straightforward and seemingly relatively inexpensive, I was beginning to wonder if it was going to be something more unsavoury which might have jeopardized getting what i think is otherwise a good wee motor back on the road.
Thank you.

Wink re: Valeo clutch & Gearbox replacement

Well.. to fix it will require a new clutch kit (make sure you also fit a new release bearing and slave cylinder, if yours is a concentric type/inside the gearbox housing, rather than external...) and you'll have to remove and then refit the gearbox... so it's not doing badly, as far as un-savoury goes.

Still ... sounds like a "new clutch" (and release bearing and cylinder) will be all you need.

re: Valeo clutch & Gearbox replacement

The 1.4 engine has a conventional external slave cylinder, so it doesn't need replacing unless it's leaking.

Hi folks
Got the clutch done and she drives fine, can't believe how light the pedal is now. But noticed wee bit of an oil leak from the housing area - see photies. Take it that these guys should be nipped up tight?
