Re: Faulty instrument cluster victims

The alternator or aux' belt (they don't drive the fan any more) is on the right hand side of the car, behind the wheel arch liner. If you remove the liner you'll see it.

It's held on by the ribs, which run in the grooves on the metal pulleys... and held tight by the tensioner.

The tensioner on the 1.6 is a manual one I think. You should see two bolts and a plastic pulley about half way between the alternator and the crankshaft pulleys. If you loosen both bolts, the backing plate should rotate away from the belt.. which makes it loose enough to remove.

And take a photo of the old belt before you remove it so you can remember how it goes on.

After you fitted the new one, move the pulley plate in the direction of the belt until it's as tight as you can push it. Nip up the bolts and then ease the tensioner away until you can twist the belt through 90 degrees if you apply finger pressure alone. Tighten the bolts and re-check it.

Don't leave it too loose (it'll squeal) and don't overtighten it (it'll wreck the alternator bearings).... but it's tricky to give a definitive "how much pressure does it need"... you could have fingers like Popeye... normally "as tight as I can make it using just my hands" works for me.

Be careful if the car is just on a jack.. all that exertion can move it.

Re: Faulty instrument cluster victims

Instructions from the Stilo workshop manual are below.

Nobody uses the torque wrench tool to measure the tension.
The tool 2a is a hexagon Allen key as shown in the diagram, not a spanner as stated in the description.
