Hello a Newbie to the Forum and to Fiat , recently brought a Stilo diesel 1.9 (120) cars runs ok but is quite noisy when cold or warm , and from inside the cabin - but only on idle not when moving , steering wheel has a slight vibration not bad , is this normal for this Car , current millage is 130000 , any advise please , thank you.

Is this a 1.9 16v or 1.9 8v... and is it a multijet or jtd?

I have a 1.9 16v multijet 150hp... engine might be similar as don't think they do a 120hp version in jtd form...

All i can say is mine appears to be quite noisy too on idle... but when driving is smooth as silk :) until the turbo breaks loose that is.

I had the chance to ride shotgun in Yorkshire 007's motor and his on idle was so much quiter... could barley hear it compared to how mine sounds... i think his is a JTD 115 hp.

Thank you for the reply its a M-Jet 120 Diesel - just checking to see if this is normal for the Car or if there is something wrong , thanks.

I doubt there is an issue... after all these engines are one of the most robust diesel engines on the market.

Can you post a video of the engine running with the bonnet open and then with it closed.

I also think yours is an 8v... probably noiser than mine but allbeit similar as all multijet 1.9's seem to be noisy.

Gerrard is a 115bhp JTD and he was a clattery old beast when I got him.

I spent a lot of time strapping down and re-attaching anything that could possibly move, rattle or vibrate... e.g the plastic intake pipe was touching the battery case, the engine cover had a bolt missing, some pipes were unclipped and touching the bulkhead... the lower wheel arch liners weren't 100% bolted down, the battery cover was loose.. etc..

Re-attaching everything properly made a fair improvement to the "noise".

I also dose the engine up on 2-Ethyl Hexyl Nitrate (rocket fuel for diesels  ) - it improves the hexame rating of especially supermarket fuel and makes the engine run more smoothly.

My beast is fairly civilized now.

To reduce the noise, try adding some 2 stroke oil to your fuel. 30ml per 20l of diesel i think is the dilution rate.

The oil must be Jaso FB spec compliant, low ash, and mineral only. This does 2 things, firstly it reduces injector noise, and it also helps lubricate the high pressure fuel pump since the introduction of low sulphur diesel reduces the fuel's lubricating properties.

If this reduces the noise, just add some ever other fill up.

Yikes.. i have been playing with stuff on mine... adding to the fuel etc.

I had a smokey start up about 5 or 10secs when left over night stood or left 7hrs at work stood, it would chug for 5 to 10secs, sometimes longer if left longer... a quick blip of the loud peddal and it stops this quicker, also produces blue smoke when it chugs.

Anyhow, in terms of additives..

I had had about 4.5 ltrs of plain shell diesel in the tank, it was half in the red and took 53.5ltrs of vpower nitro diesel till it blew back out... anyhow, also added a double shot of redex diesel cleaner before filling up whilst i was at the pump and when i got home i put in a 500ml shot of redex diesel cetane booster to treat 50ltr fuel.

It didnt chug and puff on a cold start since thursday last week until today it did for 3 secs or so when starting it in cold hard rain...

Anyhow, it seems to feel much smoother and is much better on mpg... so far so good. Used less than a quater of a full tank since last Thursday and she is driven daily.

If it's chugging on start up, it will be one or more of the glowplugs that need replacing, as one or more of the cylinder temps are not high enough to start complete combustion, hence the blue smoke on startup.

Is the insulation present under the bonnet?

And I wouldn't mess with two stroke oil or similar, just use special formulated additives for Diesel engines, like Redex, Wynns etc.
Use only high quality fuel, like BP Ultimate Diesel etc.

Yea i thought this... and yes i did have one fail.

However, I replaced all 4 with genuine bosch ones and cleared the fault code and it was fine for a few weeks but seems to do it more so in cold damp conditions.

If i turn to on twice, to activate plugs twice it helps... but also using vpower helps... much cleaner and easier to burn.

I would also check out the earthing straps and contact points on the car. I tightened and lubed all the points in my 115 Jtd and it did make a difference. A lot smoother now.

I too also run V Power fuel which also seems to make a difference.
