Technical Blow out + new wheel trashed

So today... rear end lifted and on axel stands choked with wood, rest of suspension off... all for corners removed, shafts tied up, new pads arrived, waiting on discs and coilovers, also noticed rear pads are below acceptable limit but evenly worn so replacing with new discs and pads on friday... all coming along now

At least the rears arent seized, just to add to your woes then mate!

Glad it's all coming along well for you :D

Have you got someone tee'd up to do the suspension setup work for you again? With coilovers ideally you want the corner weights balancing round the car for best setup.

Hey artermis.

Work stopped due to some other family issues.

Hopefully will be back in with it at somepoint today.

I have no idea about corner weights and setting it all up.

The instructions that came with the kit where very vague and it got me very worried, i need some help now on the rear end, i have fitted new springs and attached shocks to the rear beam.. in struggling with the top mounting inside the wheel arch.

There is two rubbers, i have no idea which way round they go... each side on the rear where not identical so someone has most likely worked on it before and not put it back together properly so now im stuck.

Attached is a pic of the two rubbers, one small one and one large one but where do they go?

Okay so a few phone calls to fiat and suspersport... the rear end is done... would still like a 2nd opinion thought.

The biggest rubber whick is in the boot under the metal plate and bolt.

The smallest rubber whick is underneath meeting the other whick above.

I have nipped it all up tight then lowered the bottom, just need to remove the stands on rear then loosed and then nip & torque the lower nut to release strain on the bush.

BIG problem though... i set the front shocks to lowest ride hight (no need to compress spring to fit top mount) hey presto after 20mins scratching my head and not wanting to damage / scratch new springs... anyway, all done and ready to fit.. then bang! Hub carrier is too large :( my multijet sporting has abarth hubs!!!

FIAT why did u do this...

Im really fed up right now.. was so close to getting her back round to my house then this.

Apparantley, some jtd's have abarth hubs, same with the multijet

Two options, downgrade hubs to the normal ones (i dont want to. Fiat did it for a reason, more power and weight probably requires beefier hubs, carriers)... so either downgrade to fit my new shocks or refund or buy new front ones for the abarth spec...

Will update you all tomorrow once me and seller has spoken to supersport

By the way, the seller has been great, even offered to pay me the costs to downgrade the hubs or a full refund.

Downgrading hub carrier (from abarth to standard)

Hey up all,

So the coilovers i got don't fit on the front :(

My hubs carrier wont slot in to bolt up.
It appears that fiat have fitted the abarth ones.

Can they be downgraded.

I have rang a few places and no-one has done it.

It was a big thing on vw's and was a direct fit (or so i was told)

But.. im worried about the hub itself and the drive shaft ends... will they fit a smaller hub carrier as a direct fit and is it safe to do?

Currently waiting on emails from seller and supersport in germany, i may have to buy another front set of correct shocks if they will supply on there own.

This car keeps knocking me back with thing after thing, ive also just relocated home so the car is not round the corner from me now, its 5mile away, starting to feel like the old 1.2 i had.... arghhhhh....

Any help appreciated.

Kind regards,
Daniel.

Re: Downgrading hub carrier (from abarth to standard)

Ok... so few phone calls later... my mechanic tells me its not a direct swap.

Might have to revert the suspension to factory for now, specialist has parts in stock that i need... just waiting on more emails from supersport, im hoping they can change them as technically they said they will fit and the paperwork also says this :(

Would definitely not recommend downgrading any suspension parts. :nono:

There are 3 different versions of the cast iron hub carrier. For the left one, part numbers are:

50701137 Only fitted to early cars with the 1.2 engine.

50701139 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, JTD 80, 90, 105 and 115.

50701141 JTD 126, 136, 140, 150 and 2.4 Abarth.

There may be a 3 digit casting number on your hub carrier that coincides with the last 3 digits of one of the above part numbers (as in my picture below) to confirm which hub carrier you have. My picture is of the right side, so ends with 140.

Not sure, but I think only early cars with the 1.2 engine had the narrow top mounting hub carrier. If that is the case, then it's somewhat disappointing that the supplier has sent you shock absorbers that are only suitable for the lower power and weight car. If they were supplied as a kit, then the springs will also be unsuitable for you higher power and weight car.

I've also read somewhere that the dimension between the 2 fixing holes on the top of the hub carrier and shock absorber can be different. I don't recall which of the 3 versions is different.

Thats davren, will go check later when i head over in a taxi, i will measure it too and then its a case of whipping of the rear and packaging it all up again.

Im reverting to factory setup on saturday, car will be back on the road then ( i cant wait) but am still very dissapointed as i was hoping ti have a nice low stiff stilo that won't ground out the engine tray...

I will get it lowered... its a case of taking measurments and getting suppliers to confirm twice over so this mistake is not made again.

Also... the wishbone is the one with the pressed steel bush (14mm) picking up a new tomorrow and its an OE one, not a cheap unbranded one (same for the shock)...

So two ebay refunds later (500 quid in cash tied up from two deals that havent got right) oh the joys!!!

Why not stick standard shockers on the front with those lowering springs you got from me. It would save your taking the other stuff off and it would still leave you with a lowered motor. Have a look on Amazon for supersport lowering shockers. Mine cost me £87 with free delivery for a set of 4.

Sweet... thanks for that bud.

I did think about this but... your jtd has smaller skinnier hub carriers so the shocks would not fit my motor... theyre hard to find for the larger thicker hub carriers... i feel a bit worried that i will endlessly be receiving the wrong bits as my reg and vin show wrong parts in almost all parts catalogues. Only fiat and updated eper /eps show correct.

I have ordered stock for now and all should be here very shortly. Fingers crossed it all fits.

I will lower her (daniella) she now has a name... but maybe in a couple of months, i need to ensure she is 100% ok when all back together and then tidy up some bits, the wheel that snapped has caused some scratches to passenger side, also grazing to under front bumper and my door trim has a buff mark on it.

Some divvy at work also rubbed there side bumper trim on my driver rear arch / bumper when parking next to me at work a few weeks back so that needs polishing out too.. got a nice black streak on rear arch and bumper (scratches off with a finger nail so its there plastic thats rubbed off onto my paint) once all tidied up... im buying some team dynamics (similar to golf gti edition 30 bbs wheels) then lowering and livery.. downpipe will be ordered next week. Still got to clean up spare intercooler and wash it with some white spirit... then relocate it. Lots to do!

Sounds like a plan bud.

So then today... used emery tape on the rear shocks... got rid of the small rust bubbles... nothing major then sprayed them up with some satin black that has its own chemicals that include primer and an ethcher to stick to almost any metal... the results are second to none... the shocks look virtually brand new, pitty the springs are coated and peeling, didnt fancy touching them so cleaned them up with elbow grease.

Like an idiot.. I struggled, cut fingers, knuckles, bruised hands trying to push in rear springs and then realised... I forgot to let one jack down on the opposite side - doh... lowered other side and springs went in like a hand and a glove... wont forgot that one next time.

Rebounds on rear shocks are perfect, nice and steady... no leaking either...

Fronts should be here by wednesday and already have a plan to get them fitted quick.

I cleaned up all rubbers, casings, repainted rear shocks, and im yet to spray the rubbers with with some silicone spray stuff to keep them fresh (can't remeber the name but you will see the tin in my pictures)

This spray should help everything to settle down with less rough resistance off the rubbers againts the metal body until it wears out (about a week or so) all helps to protect the rubber bushes and spring locating rubbers.

Shes coming along now.

Next job, need to weld up some wind back tools for rear brakes... will be quicker than using long pliers and safer and less risk of splitting seals...

So then... another update before Saturday...

Was messed about on ebay for the springs from a seller in co. Down, Bangor... pitty... anyhow..m shocks arrived yesterday..

Held off on using old springs, refunded for new springs that never arrived then was told was returned by royalmail with a red label on... and now one is missing... anyhow refunded and went back to fiat, had part no checked by three dealers... so went back to GGB (shop4parts) in my home town, phoned them up from work, spoke to sean and he remembered me from before... two springs ordered, will be delivered by their own driver and they cost me £47 odd including vat... no postage and cash on delivery.

My last thing to buy.

Some break fluid (recommendations)

And a universal c.v boot, stretchy or tong and groove?

I've used the glue on type CV boots before now. The glue sticks like **** to a blanket so really do wear the gloves that come with them when you're sticking them together. The knives are sharp too! Worked just fine though.

Thanks bud, will be ordering one today or may even just nip to the motor factors tomorrow and grab one.

Hopefully she will all be back together by sunday, then i need to source some new wheels!

Artermis do you remember which uni boot you used (sorry did you use one the stilo)... i may have to buy a stretchy one... but looking at how they are fitted requires lubrication and i was worried it would degrade the c.v grease over time... in videos they use thin based washing up liquid in warm water.
