Afternoon guys,

Can anyone help me?

I currently have a K&N panel filter in the original airbox on my multijet 150 stilo.

I wanted to upgrade it to a forced induction kit, a proper one - not just a cone shaped filter on a tube with cold air feed and inline MAF.

Obviously - I understand the airbox is designed specificly to give the engine the air it needs and acts as a plenum chamber.

Most cheap cone filters ruin all this and can easily impact performance and reduce economy.

However, a properly made induction kit (lets say, like the one a friend has on his VW Scirocco TSI or the one a neighbour has on his astra sri 150 (multijet engine) is a genuine tested product that does improve performance and MPG and is much better made than the cheap alternatives.

BUT.... I cant find one for the stilo :(

I have found them for the same engine in various other cars, even alfa's... BUT the original filter box etc is not in the same place and its hard to see on the alfa pictures if it's in the same place (under the battery tray, directly in front of the gearbox, behind the oil / intercooler...

Can anyone help here, has anyone fitted one meant for an alfa with the same engine? does the kit fit into the same location without modifications etc.

I'm getting a little cheesed off now, the bravo and other models have much more options but i keep struggling with the stilo - most decent upgrades are either for the 2.4 or the other petrol engines, not really much going on the decent front.

search for my intake mod, made a sort of enlarged scoop where the original intake is still feeding the original airbox and k+n panel filter also.
found no difference in economy afraid, also now running an 80mm maf sensor which would massively reduce intake restriction again with larger bore piping from filter to maf to turbo again no difference in economy, if anything slightly worse.
the turbo is having an easier life when on full boost and maf figures are more realistic, as std maf gives very high numbers on very high boost.
I would say don't bother on intake side.
decatting exhaust makes a big difference to turbo noise and may increase economy slightly, but im afraid the major governor for economy is right foot and probably more than normal std cars when mapped.
whats your mpg at now ? still low 30's

No intake kits there

Forced air induction kit? Mate you already have one of those courtesy of Mr Garrett - they call it a turbo.

Anything else will not achieve jack on your car. Seriously.

The only point you would need a bigger open cone filter, like the big JDM turbo rigs run, is because they run seriously up-rated turbos that hoover through a bunch more air.

The best thing you can do is shift the intercooler you have to front mount, as I think the MJs should be a side mount (SMIC) in the passenger wing, you'll see a circa 15% drop in mainfold air temp for this.

That would also free up some space for you to stick the big ass cone filter you've got into the wing space where the SMIC used to sit. That is as close as you ever going to get it to some clean cold air. You could get away with not but I'd recommend running a rain jacket on the filter. This is on the assumption that the side grill in the bumper is actually vented to allow air flow to the SMIC where us N/A stilos have a solid 'grill'.

Also replace the pipes for hard piping, think it'll only be 2in pipe but check, that'll help as it won't split on you and leak and it won't balloon like the factory rubber does!

the alfas seem to have a worse inlet design than the stilo.
the guys website is on alfa forum and at last I remember was on 280hp with his jtd 16v but still using the original filter box just with slightly larger inlet as the alfa was way smaller than stilo and the outlet side hes also on 80mm maf and pipework.

although I thought about it the area is too small in stilo to work easily unless say battery was moved to boot then nice area opens up,but as said lots of work for next to no gain.

these are guys who are looking for small gains as already maxed out easy gains from turbo, front mount intercooler, exhaust, larger maf, injectors etc.
browse the jtd tuning threads for a week or two

Maybe I wasn't clear enough, there are no Stilo JTD specific intake kits there.
Read the OP

"I wanted to upgrade it to a forced induction kit, a proper one - not just a cone shaped filter on a tube..."

Robert G8RPI.

I came up with the same result - none what so ever... they do them for the engine but not for the stilo, there is hardly any space for one.

As sussexa said - best thing to do would be to move the battery to the boot.
Over the next couple of weeks im going to be reading more threads on these engines.

Met up with an old friend last night, he's a mechanic - has tons of experience with most makes / models from the old 1970 ford to present modern motors.

He was asking if I have had the swirl flaps removed, need to read up on them as he said its not a big job, may have him do it if it brings any gains or gives me more reliability.

Also, gearbox oil - he said I should change it frequently and use top quality oil, he has had to replace **** loads of M32 boxes due to poor oil and the bearings drying up, also reading up on a quaife diff or possibly a Q2 as the standard open diff in the m32 is terrible, slightest blip on the loud pedal in a corner and it lights up both wheels and wants to understeer away from the corner...

So - the saga continues, i wont be planning any major modifications just yet, that will be some time after july / august, first starting with exhaust, power run and possible re-tune (depending on how its already been mapped)... then maybe other things like the gearbox etc.

the q2 used to be cheaper but looks like moved to quaife now

gearbox oil ive used redline mt90 I had a guide somewhere on here
I think its a 630 gearbox more now

Thats brilliant - I have seen Q2's are relativley cheap with great improvements on driving, luckily - i dont have VDC / EBD, my car just has ABS thats it... so no need to modify the ecu for traction control limitations as I read in the alfa thread...

Does the Q2 fit the M32 though, i thought it was more towards the M40 and other boxes, need to get this confirmed - as for the price of the diff, i read it was around £250 from a dealers, much cheaper than the quaife at a whopping £650 - is there much difference in performance between the two? seen as Q2 is an OEM alfa diff.

Also, you mentioned MPG's earlier, forgot to answer that.
I think its more the way im driving lol, if i tootle about like a taxi then MPG is around 40 - 45 mpg around my area (hills, stop starts, traffic etc).
And on a run - country side or motorway is around 60 - 65 MPG.

Yesterday had to go to Leeds HM Passport office - 28 mile round trip from Allerton, via Greengates then into Leeds through Armley (on the ring road), had reset the trip computer at greengates / carvley BP filling station and when I got home I had averaged 50MPG - i was taking it easy and using Cruise control but did have a couple of moments where i was squashing the loud pedal to feel the boost and see my mrs's face when it sucked her into her seat (she hates it lol...).

So, i will put it down to my bad driving, i just love the whoosh and the surge you get - im trying as hard as ever to drive it like my old NA motor but i just can't surcome to it, the urge beats me and i squish the pedal then grin like a spoilt kid :) hahahaha - i will say one thing, thank god speed camera's are mostly still yellow, touch wood - no tickets so far.

That 650 is fitted
When i had q2 fitted it was around 400 i think but you need 2 bearings as well and maybe a shim kit as it needs shimming correctly on assembly may have been seals involved, loctite etc so labour may be big portion of the £650.
I had done with gearbox out for smf and clutch so unable to split bill up.
The q2 price went up just after mine as seemed dealers relised money to be made as plenty were getting fitted.
The swirl flap delete is only worth doing as part of a cambelt change, unless its leaking boost very bad which doesnt sound like yours is.
list of garages who've fitted them in this thread
http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/tuni...nies-who-fit-the-q2-differential-upgrade.html
might discuss the change from q2 to quaife in there ?

All good info...

I am hoping to try an source a Q2 - i was hoping it was more of a direct fit without the need for modifications.

I have been quote £380 + vat to have my m32 box refurbished should it start to show signs of failing on me, this was at TopGear Transmitions in Clekheaton, close to Bradford - 12miles from my home.

They also said they can fit the diff at the same time - hoping there would be no extra cost as they would rebuilding my box anyhow (if it came to that).

This then got me thinking, do I buy the diff then get them to do a refurb on the box and fit the diff at the same time, all in all it would be quite a cheap price for the work and what i get back from it, a new box and an LSD :) win win for me.

Swirl flaps is a git of a job as it requires the inlet manifold to be removed, which in turn requires the mechanical fuel pump to be removed, which means a cambelt job at the same time. If they aint broken don't try and fix them.

What makes you sure you have an M32 box; I wouldnt have expected your car to have one.

Redline MT90 is not the correct spec for the M32 its SAE 75W-90 GL-4 and should be SAE 75W-85 GL-4. Not that common, but if stuck a Vauxhall dealer should have it. With the known M32 issues I'd not recommend a different oil to that specified. If you look at the spec sheets you will see a significant difference in 40 deg C viscosity and pour point between the Redline MT90 and (say) Castrol Syntrans 75W-85. The level is critical too. There is no dip stick or level plug, you have to drain the 'box and then put the correct quantity in. See https://www.fiatforum.com/croma-ii/429554-croma-1-9-jtd-16v-2005-gearbox-oil.html
