Hi everyone....after owning 2 Cinquecentos and several Alfa's, I've just bought a 2002 1.9 JTD Stilo.

It needs a few bits doing to it....mainly change the front wishbones, but no rush on those.

I've noticed theres a tapping noise coming from the belt end, which increases with revs, and the aux belt squeaks when under load.

I'm assuming its one of the pulleys/tensioners on the aux belt.

With the 2002 model, does it have a simple pulley, or is it one of the sprung pivoting tensioners like on the Alfa TS engines? Or both?

Thanks for your help.

If you have air con it would have automatic tensioner if remember correct, have to put spanner on the tensioner pulley to slacken tension on the belt, there is also an idler pulley , as well as pulley on air con and alternator, worn belt can also cause squeaking sound,
There is also the crank pulley that can cause problem if the rubber in crank pulley has perished, you could try removing aux belt ,run engine to see if it is aux belt and pulleys that are problem area and not crank pulley or cambelt area.

Thanks....I'll try and have a go next week. I was thinking it could be the tensioner as I've had to replace it on 3 of my Alfas. I'll try and get hold of an engine stethoscope as well...hopefully make it easier to pinpoint.

I had a quick look this afternoon. The main crank pulley "looks" okay. Obviously I could only see the outer face, but the rubber looks fairly decent....no sign of perishing.

The only thing I noticed was that there is slight movement in the pulley to the top left of the crank pulley. Obviously with the engine running it moves slightly as its pivoted, but I also noticed a slight movement "in/out".

Sometime next week I'll change it and the belt anyway....both look quite old.

I solved the airbag failure problem, unplugged all the connectors and plugged them back in, job done. I'll give them a spray with electrical cleaner next week.

The " engine fault" flashed up this afternoon and it went into limp mode. I unplugged and replugged a few connections in the engine bay, and it went off and hasn't come back.

And finally the preheat fault message is on....checked the plugs and they're fine...possibly like all the other electrics, all the contacts need a good clean.

I changed the tensioner, idlers and belt today.....tapping and squeaking still there. Now I've got under and had a proper look, its not the belt squeaking, but sounds like the rubber on the crank pulley.

As suggested above, I'll next fit a new crank pulley....only £42 on Ebay.

Fortunately the tensioner and idlers did need changing, so not a waste fitting new parts.

The crankshaft pulley has been modified. If you get the modified one, you will also need 4 shorter bolts for it.

Hey all, I have a similar problem to this one. Can anyone say what the solution was ? I'm assuming the crank pulley.

I will open a new thread as i've found nothing conclusive on the site but for the sake of continuity and future troubleshooting here's an outline :

- 4 months ago I changed my belt & crank pulley as they were very worn, though still functional (intermittent noise from worn belt).
- My stilo 1.9jtd has an auto tensioner - new belt went on fine and new crank design came with proper screws so no worries on parts fitting.
- I could hear a slight clicking a few days later and since then have readjusted the crank pulley to ensure it's perfectly aligned as it should be (small nob & guide hole must be lined up).
- The noise got progressively worse over 2/3 months and I can no longer ignore it as people in the streets duck for cover when i'm coming. The tapping or clacking noise is really loud.
- Today I took removed the aux belt and ran engine. No tapping. I suspected tensioner as it wobbles a fair bit under operation (probably normal - circa 15mm) and dismantled the pulley to take a look - a bit worn on the inside from occasional friction but otherwise fine, put it back on with belt. Noise comes back. Sounds like metal on metal to me.

Any ideas ? Tomorrow i'll try sticking a screw driver and plastic bottle to each pulley engine running to get a megaphone effect and maybe find it that way. I have other electrical issues which are nuts but I think they really are just bad connectors, earth wire or dirty fuses.

Thanks in advance !
