What sort of cost would i pay to get them adjusted (£) They are starting to chatter when cold. Sounds like an old fiesta in the morning.

Forgot to say, 1.2.

Hmm how odd, as in the noise. Ill do an overdue oil/filter change and see how that goes.

Cheers

Worth considering that even on cold starts or red lining the oil filter can become bypassed and the operation of the hydraulic lifters requires clean oil.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=309756

Once the tappets become blocked or full of debris they cannot easily self clean even if clean oil is supplied - a compelling reason to not use silicon on engine gaskets and stick with the recommended gaskets and sealers.

I am about to inspect my hydraulic lifters on my punto with a 1.2 16V 188A500 engine built in 2004 and registered in 2005. Hopefully i can just clean the lifters and put it all back together as good as new:) However there are no replaceable bearing parts in the cam carriers and my car has done almost 216,000kms so I might be opening a can of worms...........

Currently my car sounds like this.........(different camera to previous version)

Good day

Since it is hydraulic, I would check oil level, low oil level will result in noise until engine speeds up and are warm.
If not oil level, than oil pressure, maybe oil pump or gasket?

If noise does not get less after it is warm and oil level and pressure is fine, then you have another problem.

I don't think it can be blocked orifices, unless you run with very very old oil and filter, and now your engine is grinding metal.

Even when the engine is warm, many people have reported the hydraulic lifters can become degraded by gunk inside them and on this forum it has been suggested to drain the oil and idle with diesel for 15 minutes because diesel is a thin oil with plenty of detergents.

Taking the cam carrier off is one way to find out if its an oil starvation problem or just caused by debris in the lifters

NOT RECOMENDING THIS AT ALL " idle with diesel for 15 minutes "
Unless you have a very bad oil/oil filter maintenance schedule or wrong oil or used "DIESEL" Your hydraulic lifters should be in good condition, even after 250 000km's

tip; never mix oils, if your oil is white, water is leaking in and then can help degrading engine parts.

What grade oil are you using? Use something thin like 5w30, gets to the top of the engine quicker from cold, meaning less wear and less noise.

I always use Valvoline Durablend 5w30 in my 1.2 :)

Regardless of whatever is good for the original poster here, mine seems to have tappet noise, i am using the correct oil, I have clean dry oil, it has no diesel in it, it is not likely to get diesel in it, and no matter what has happened before it seems to be a good idea to me to investigate what is going on now.

What actually is your recommendation in my circumstances where i have created a video of the noise? (y)

there are proper products to clean or release sticky valve lifters etc
here is cheap one in kit with injector cleaner and oil flush also
this ones for petrol
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Pack-ENGINE-FLUSH-HYDRAULIC-VALVE-LIFTER-ADDITIVE-PETROL-INJECTOR-CLEANER-/231314684157
heres diesel and dearer as wnyns
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WYNNS-3Pack-ENGINE-FLUSH-HYDRAULIC-VALVE-LIFTER-DIESEL-INJECTOR-FUEL-CLEANER-/221664287037?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item339c38993d
or just the lifter stuff alone
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WYNNS-HYDRAULIC-VALVE-LIFTER-TREATMENT-FOR-PETROL-OR-DIESEL-ENGINES-350ml-/170762949697?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27c243d441
other makes are out there shop around search for reviews etc
expensive stuff
http://www.powerenhancer.co.uk/product.php/663/bardahl-hydraulic-valve-lifter-treatment

edit also you tubed the diesel instead of oil as sounds crazy

anyone considering this read the comments and decide , is it worth the risk, when a flush to add to the oil is probably cheaper than the diesel fuel

I suggest removing the plastic cover and using the screw driver against the ear hearing test and listen on top of every piston set and see if the noise is specific to a piston set or on all.
If all are the same it might even be an intake or outlet gasket?

Me?

Dono as it the first time i have put oil in it. As its well overdue ill be chucking in tesco cheap 10w40 and taking it on a run for 40-50 miles and do a proper oil filter change. I do have an STP engine flush in the Attic but i think the oil oil flush will be enough.

Using a screwdriver as suggested, the very noticeable tappet/hammering sound in the video is very clearly located above the number three cylinder right hand exhaust tappet. It is clear the sound is located very high up in the cam carrier. No noises of any substance from the exhaust or inlet manifolds.

A few hours earlier I added some LiquiMoly hydraulic lifter cleaning oil and took the car for a couple of long drives on the motorway. Zero change noticed so far.

I am only waiting for a gasket from ebay to see what is going on in there.

I think he meant to say use Diesel oil not actual Diesel. Diesel oil uses extra detergents that help clean an engine out.

Ok, let me rephrase: I highly recommend not using any other lubricant in your engine other than the approved lubricant as per OEM specifications.

I also don't support any additive nor quick fix solvent.

"diesel oil" if you refer to motor oil used for diesel engines e.g. for the JTD, than I would ask myself the question before I use it, are the SG (specific gravity) higher or lower than the recommended motor oil? well in this case it is higher, so knowledge tells me that it can not work does not matter if their are extra detergents (which there not) in normal oil for diesel engines.

You just use a diesel oil with similar SAE rating. The bottom end of the diesel Stilo is essentially the same construction as a petrol. So long as you drive the engine quietly (which I think is a better option than sitting idling) there is minimal risk to the engine.
When I got my Abarth I put 15/40 diesel semi synthetic oil in it and took for a quiet 1/2 hour drive. Changed oil and filter on return to 10/60 Castrol edge synthetic. (have had the car 3 years now)
The only real risk is that by removing dirt from the engine it could cause trouble before being trapped by filter but then the dirt is there and I would like to get it removed.
