I have a problem with my Stilo where when the car is warmed up, the exhaust gets a boomy, farty tone, and sounds like its blowing. Took it over to the local exhaust centre for a visual look. They said it looked OK except for a thin layer of soot just before the back silencer, which indicated a leak and I should get it sorted. Booked it in with the dealer, who later said they couldn't fault anything, and that the soot is collecting around an escape hole for water when the exhaust is cold, and the exhaust centre should have known better. They politely sent me on my way, and of course the problem remains.
Thinking about it, when the exhaust centre had the car on the ramp and we saw the soot, we couldn't see any hole and presumed the soot was coming out of a minute crack or similar. Surely if a hole was meant to be there to allow water to escape, it would have to be of a size to allow water droplets through? Does anyone know if this is the case on their Stilo, or have I got a problem? Even if it was a tiny hole, would it be enough to make it blow? All these questions, sorry!
Any ideas would be welcome. Many thanks.

I have the exact same problem, the bottom of the back box is completely black from carbon but I can't find a water escape hole, it's going back to FIAT in the morning for a check up, I'll let you know what they say.

Cheers.

Cheers Twincamms, if you could tell us what they report that'd be great. I don't know if it's the cause of my problems, but its really spoiling my enjoyment of the car. When it is really boomy, it feels like the performance is down, and it is harder to accelerate, but that might just be me imagining it because of the noise. Does yours 'boom' when warmed up?

Thanks.

Hi, just got back from FIATs, they said that FIAT drill a 6mm hole into the back box to let out condensation therefore giving the box a longer life. This hole may also be responsible for the fatring sound you hear, technically known as the FIAT Rasp. The steel where the hole is drilled is three times thicker than the rest of the exhaust to prevent corrosion begining there. That's it, hope it helps!

Thanks for that. So is my boom normal? The fact that worries me is that it doesn't do it when the car (or probably the exhaust) is cold and it isn't always consistent. Does everyone's Stilo rasp when warmed up? Under acceleration sometimes mine can sound like a boy-racer's Nova, and makes the kids heads turn. Quite embarrassing actually, everyone presumes your want a race! When it is cold though, I can glide along almost silently. Thanks again though.

I'm not an expert, but I used to have a FIAT Brava, and as it got hotter it got louder, however, when I looked at the exhaust myself it was sound from back to front. I took it to the local H-Q garage and they said the noise was the ceramics in the CAT that had shattered, they reckon this is caused when the exhaust is hot and you drive through a big puddle, cold meets hot, causing the ceramics to shatter. I don't know if this is just a sales pun, but I do know that after replacing it, at a cost of £193 the car was silent again. Have it checked out.
