Technical How Do I Boost Power? (Cheaply)

Some people rate Shell Optimax petrol. Myself, I can't tell the difference.

I think amongst the cheapest performance improvers are better exhaust system and air filters. I think everything else involves large quanities of cash and time in a garage.

Erm...pushing harder on the right hand pedal makes you go faster. ;)

Not much you can you can do will increase power a lot unless ecu chipped and then the car becomes harder to drive at low revs and more thirsty. Big exhausts give a very small amount, and unless the catalyic converter is removed you will feel no icrease hardly at all.

Ok, thanks for the FiatExpert, do you buy the Kent or Piper Cams thing though? And what about a K&N kit? This 1.6 16v engine, not very tuneable eh? If I chipped it what gains should I expect, they are 105BHP standard.

Cheers.

It all depends on who chips it. Cams are o.k but if not matched with a chipped ecu it could cause more problems, as all reading the engine ecu reads will be out of range and it will always try to correct it...:D:D

Got to remember also your vehicle is highly sophisicated, and will have EOBD on. Anything which alters emmisions and the fuel injection light will come on , and if left on you can be fined of the police, if its on due to an emission problem

You are probably as well selling up and getting something with a turbo on it. Putting cams, exhausts, filters will not give the response of a turbo. The disappointing performance will reappear as newer little flyers come on the market and shoot past you.

Cheers, Steel Grey Abarth in front of you!

What a load of ******** especially Fiat Expert!

Brava GT how much power to £ on cams??? Alfa 2.4 JTD - 60 BHP, 60 lb ft torque £350 on a re-map - do that with cams! Stilo 1.2 8BHP for £180,do that with a full exhaust or cams!

The car does not become harder to drive at lower revs and it doesn’t become more thirsty. I have a seriously remapped Punto as a test car and the economy is up at 52mpg and is a honey in traffic. When were you working on cars? By the way the increase is from 80 BHP standard to 130 BHP and nearly 200lb ft torque. We have huge experience over the entire range of modern Italian cars from Punto's, to 156 GTA though Multipla's

You will not be stopped in the UK for an engine light and they will not do on the spot emissions problems - even a diesel that smokes like a bitch won’t be stopped unless its a truck.

There are though very few alternatives on the 1.6 engine, you wont get piper or kent cams unless you have them specially made by them. C&B in Italy don’t do them for the 1.6 as far as I am aware either.

If you want real power I am afraid the options are 1.9 JTD (about 170BHP) and 2.4 (about 190BHP) from a re-map - don’t chip for Gods sake that will invalidate warranties etc.

This is not advertising as we don’t do the 1.6!

No offence guys, but research pays.

Hi Alfanige

Thanks for your comments and your expertise. What do you recommend then? Would a K&N kit make a difference? The car doesn't like Optimax, I tried it and it was a little jumpy. I had a Brava prior to this car and I believe it had the same engine which felt a lot pokier, any reason why?

I look forward to your comments.

Cheers.

I think the answer needs to start with how much have you got to spend and don’t forget to include the hike in insurance and the additional depreciation on the car if you change anything mechanical permanently.

Certainly every little helps; an induction kit and exhaust will help the car breathe more efficiently. A de-cat pipe will help a lot, however you will need to put the original back on for the MOT - add the labour on that to the cost of your MOT.

After that, you are going to spend serious money on lightened components, cams, balancing etc.

So, really weigh up the performance you will get for the amount you are going to spend over a couple of years, then look at how much a bigger engine version will be - and don’t forget it will be cheaper to insure as it will be standard!

My advice.....buy a JTD, once you have you will wonder why you never bought one before, if you want a demo in one come over and see us near Warwick!

Ok

Thanks for your help and honesty Nige.

Mind you I can't beleive that someone is recommending a diesel over a petrol. Are you saying it's better than the 2.4 Arbath as well? I nearly bought the 1.9 JTD but couldn't get my head round a diesel. I hired a Picasso diesel in the summer to do an airport run and it put me off diesels forever, it was like driving a bus!

Well at least you've given me something to think about.

Cheers
Savi.

Yup diesel has started to rule my friend. Even as short a time ago as 3 months I said I would never own a diesel - but now I am after a 2nd! The Alfa 2.4JTD is awesome and coming down in price 2nd hand.

If you are serious about putting cams into your car I can enquire about importing some direct from C&B if I can get a decent order together. I cant obviously give prices until I obtain a shipment number to make it worthwhile. We would then supply you but not fit them about could arrange that for you as well.
