Technical Stilo:Use hand brake and gear 1 or else!!!

"If a car is hit on a street or road then it is seen to cause more damageif your car careers into the road and persons on the pavement etc, have time to react rather drivers on roads swerving inot more oncoming traffic - what we a re taught up here anyway, regardless or curbed wheels or knocked out tracking[/QUOTE]"

But if you're parked on a slope facing upwards you would have to turn the wheels towards the road to stop it from rolling down so maybe you have to choose; car in the middle of the road or car in the river!!!!

With the Selespeed models the car automatically reverts to 1st gear when it has come to a halt and you are supposed to leave in 1st when parking. If you switch off in neutral then you are prompted by a loud insistant beeping. An excellent safety feature I've always thought. The only exception is when you are in reverse already.

It's not a car fault, that's driver error. Read the manual as they say, leave it in gear when parked on a hill. I'd advise leave it in first EVERY TIME. Don't even bother trying to work out if it's uphill or downhill. Just stick it in first as soon as your engine is off

Volvos have the same rear disc set up so the handrake force lessens dramatically as the disc cools and so they decided to fit an extra handbrake mechanism which acts like the old drum brakes (because Volvo drivers are Volvo drivers I suppose) but the answer is still the same even for them

WHEN PARKING ON A HILL ALWAYS LEAVE IT IN GEAR

What you could get away with on old drum brakes you can't now. You must change you're parking routine or your car will change shape :)

You might as well leave 10 grand in cash in the gutter and see if it's still there in the morning!

Maybe it's my old aircraft upbringing but I would have been shot if I didn't chock the aircraft wheels EVERY TIME when parked and that's on flat ground
