Technical Upgrading Speakers & Tweeters

I think the thing to bear in mind is how complicated the door trim is, the lad who chopped his about did it the wrong way in my opinion, I would personally recommend you take your time, esp when removing the trim panel as you don't want to damage any of your clips.

Be sure to put some dynamat or similar around where you are mounting your speaker (this isn't expensive and it will maximise benefit). And make sure there is nothing left loose.

I think nothing on the Stilo is an easy job:)

Stilo TURBO!!!!(diesel)

Well i couldnt remember the exact company name but i do know that major car audio manufacturers such as pioneer make custom-fit speakers that replace the OEM speakers.Have a look on their website see if you can find any for the stilo.

Hi Sly,

I've changed the front speakers on my 3 door stilo and put some Alpine Components in. (ie Changed the tweeter near the mirror and the speaker in the door)
The answer to your question is...Yes is possible but it's a little time comsuming and with every job the 1st side takes ages whilst you work out how to do it and the second side is a doddle and done in 20 minutes.

I removed the door panel as best as I could, bearing in mind I couldn't get it off completely, I ended up working in a small gap. This was to reduce the amount of broken clips, so there was a chance of it going back on and not rattling.

I removed the old speakers and cut the speakers part out of them and then used the plastic mounting ring to put the new speaker in. (It fitted perfectly) AND NO RATTLES!!

The tweeter fitting required some good thick glue to hold the new tweeter in the right position pointing out through the grill. once set clip it back in. I used all existing cabling to the door but replaced connections and also replaced the wire up to the tweeter, the alpine's I got had a connection from the woofer to the tweeter so I used it.

There is no way to remove the speaker grill and replace the speaker without removing the door panel, and when you see the back of the door panel you'll see why. If you try to remove the grill you'll just knacker the plastic.

My biggest concern was that I'd break too many clips and the door panel would then rattle for ever but not taking it off completely and being gentle to start with paid off.

..AND, it sounds so much better!! I would quite happily do it again, it's not really that difficult a job, but don't think you'll be able to do it in 1 hour!!!

Hope this helps,
Damo.
PS Happy to answer other questions about the job if you need it.

Ive just got a fairly basic sony set up on my sub and amp, 460 watt xplode amp and the 1200 xplode hexangonal sub, it fitted so easily cos im lucky enough to have the power outlet in the boot so i can run it off that to save gettin a live feed from the main battery, and then for the remote turn etc just simply ripped off the interior kick plate things and ran the wires under there, nice and neat and really simple, possibly easier than my old punto.

2002 Stilo 1.6 Active, almost debadged and i have big plans!!!

Yes its very easy to do the front ones. The rear unfortunatly require removal of the whole rear seat, but its not too difficult. Messge me for more details. Currently running 4 sets of Fosgate 2 ways, 2 Fosgate amps and 2 11" focal subs, and NO rattle (well i haven't had the system on full yet,its loud enough at half volume:))

I looked into this mate, its a nightmare...the speakers are mounted in pods (not just screwed in) so you need replacement pods, approx £50. The guy at the my local ICE shop had a look for me, He told me not to bother because the standard speakers are actually suprisingly good and I would have to spend a lot of money to improve on them.

The problem is if you are running all of the sound through them. You need to set up you low pass filter on the sub and get your door speakers on a high pass filter (so no low frequencies distort the clarity. I do this in mine and there is no distortion (Bo-Selecta will tell you the same with his).

The best way to improve the performance of your fronts is to amplify them...I too am looking into this at the moment...it should be easy to do, just loop another amp off you current amp and run cables back up the car.

Hope this helps and good luck! :D

wow it does sound difficult. the thing is i dont have any amps or extra speakers, just the four standard ones an the two tweaters. read the two how to guides to fit the power lead for an amp. got as far as just about to take the glove box out to look for the hole to feed it through. but have a block of wires fixed on the side of it an they wouldnt stretch far enough for me to get it out, so gave up on it. do you need amps etc. to change the frequencies? thanks for the replies, very informative. If you only have the 4 standard speakers, I would definately not recommend upgrading the front componants and they are even more specifically designed for only mid range and above. Therefore, you would be disappointed as they would boost the clarity but you would loose lower frequency sounds further (i.e. make it sound tinny)

The first thing that you should do really is sort out an amp and a sub. The amplifier will have a low pass frequency built in...so that easy (if you are struggling with fitting this, I had mine done for me as i couldn't locate a grommit to get from the engine bay, It cost me £50 from my local ICE dealer which is a bargain really :D )

Most new after market head units will have a high pass filter built in, so if you have an aftermarket head unit have a look in the instruction manual. If you don't have this function, I beleive you can buy a little circuit board from halfords which you can wire into the speakers which will do the same job (don't quote me on this...I just think I can remember seeing something when browsing once, lol!)

Ok, this may be a "you're so stupid for even asking that stupid question, stupid head" thread but here I go . . .

Can I buy the BOSE upgrade tweeters from FIAT (about £9 each) and just replace the standard ones, and does anyone know if that little black triangle that holds the tweeters can be removed without taking the door panel off?

Thanks

Re: Upgrading Tweeters

Oops, there's one thread I forgot to reply to!

Yeah, BOSE OEM tweeters sound much better, and are a direct replacement, sound much much better! Really worth the £9 per side! (y)

May do the door ones too, when this car stops costing me money on stupid things like exhausts!

Re: Upgrading Tweeters

Have you got the part code for those tweeters? Did you look in to trying to get all the Bose speaker options from Fiat for the front and back etc?

Re: Upgrading Tweeters

the little triangle which hold the tweeters can be removed by gently popping a screwdriver behind them and they will jost pop off and they just require pushing back on,,easy no need to remove anything else

Re: Upgrading Tweeters

Hey Guys

I will indeed upgrade all speakers to Bose one I've cleared some of my debts! Part numbers and approximate prices (may be a year out of date) are below:
FRONT TWEETERS: 46772452 (£8.50) x2
FRONT SPEAKERS: 46754228 (£10) x2
REAR 5DR SPEAKERS: 46772452 (£10) x2
REAR 3DR DRIVERS SIDE SPEAKER: 46806815 (£15) x1
REAR 3DR PASSENGER SIDE SPEAKER: 46772454 (£15) x1

Good luck!!

Re: Upgrading Tweeters

Just to let you know, I've called Research Fiat about those part codes, and apparently, they are the standard speakers...... not Bose. They said they did not have any Bose or speaker upgrades listed for the Stilo!!!

Re: Upgrading Tweeters

Those part numbers are for speakers with option "718", Hi-Fi, which added the active Subwoofer in the boot. Also, FIAT upgraded the speakers to Bose speakers, i.e. more power, however they are not branded as Bose. Even if they are not Bose (which all the brochures at the time stated they were), they are higher powered standard fit speakers!!

Re: Upgrading Tweeters

Right, well I've had to take both door trims off mine, as I've replaced the door restrictor bars as they were banging like hell!! Also they were modified mid 2004 to have a plastic cover on them so the doors are now silent :D

So, since the door trims were off, I've ordered in the front upgraded speakers. I did comtemplate getting them from halfords (where I work, so I could get a cheap set), but seeing as I like things all original I've gone for these; and my dealer did them for £15 a pair!! :D
