Can anyone tell me from what year Fiat started fitting the 6 speed gearbox to the JTD, all the ones I've seen are 5 speed. I have been looking at a dynamic model JTD, but it has steel wheels. Is this specification correct, I thought Dynamic's had alloy wheels?

Also what is the typical MPG you JTD drivers are getting?

Cheers

When introduced, the 5dr Dynamic had plastic wheel trims. It got alloys in late 2003/ early 2004 (I think) so that would be on a '53' plate.

My Oct, 02 plate JTD has 16" alloys. Find it difficult to believe that Fiat would put plastic wheel trims on their top of the range diesel. Perhaps it was the 80BHP version?

I suspect they were fitted as an option then, as alloys were optional on the 5dr Dynamic and 3/5dr Active models. The 3dr Dynamic had alloys fitted in-line with it's 'sporty' (I hate that word. Football is a sport; car's are not) credentials.

10 minutes looking at the Fiat used car web-site will show that early Dynamics had plastic wheel trims fitted.

In fact, have a look at D. Salmon Cars and check the 1.6 Dynamic out half way down the page (Orion Grey on at £5,995)

Or

Northgate Fiat on page 2 there is a JTD Dynamic, roughly fourth one down (Bordeaux Rosem at £6,295)

I’ve covered 10,000 miles in 6 months in my 3 door JTD.

My trip to work is about 34 miles each way, 30 miles of it on dual carriageways / motorway. Driving fairly briskly through the gears and sticking to an indicated 80mph (TomTom SatNav indicates about 75) where possible, I get 44 – 46 mpg.

During a 2,600 mile trip to France in the Summer I got an overall 47.9 mpg.

I week or so ago, when there was all the hype about blockades at fuel refineries and people were panic buying I decided (after filling up!) to see if there was any way I could get my fuel consumption anywhere near the 53.3 mpg Government combined figure.

By changing my driving style – changing up gear at 2000 rpm and sticking to around 65-70 mph the computer is indicating 52.2 mpg over the last 700 miles – quite a difference.

Has anyone compared the computer’s figures with manually calculated consumptions – how accurate is it?

I see what you mean. You obviously know Stilos very well. I haven't had the car that long but I guess the alloys must have been an option along with the metallic paint and the skyport.

I find Fiat options very confusing. When I collected the motor I was sure, from reading through Fiat specs, that it had an alarm and cruise control (so did the garage!) but it didn't. :(

Remember the original Stilo add and how it made the "Easy Go" system look like a standard feature. Rather stupidly I fumbled around the dash thinking "the buttons got to be here somewhere" before realizing it's yet another factory option.

Of course, there are plenty of nice features which you do get and would most likely only dream of getting on many other cars.

It’s a great motor :)

this sounds exactley like me, but covered 16,000 miles since march (with a re-map) on one occasion i managed 69.1mpg

i get around 450 miles from a tank if i stick to 2500rpm on the motorway

Hey guys, i got the 80bhp remapped, and i seem to be getting around 500+ miles out the tank on average. Used to get more before the remap...but then i used to drive alot slower!!!

Thought I’d try for some really good mpg figures on the Poole to Plymouth run over the weekend. Basic driving style was to keep it legal (of course) and only use real power for overtaking when it would put me in front so I could use downhill glides to full advantage and not get stuck behind somebody driving on their brakes! As it so happened, the traffic was really quite heavy which, perhaps surprisingly, helped the result as it stopped me driving to the speed limit.

The result was 62.5 mpg with an average speed of 48 mph. :)

I’d intended to try and repeat it on the return journey but after driving along single track roads around Rame Head (lovely wilderness area south of Torpoint) for quite a while and barely getting past 2nd gear - that put paid to that. :(

Nice clear roads on the way back so it was a good chance to see what the motor could do ;) and this brought the consumption for the complete round trip to 57.9 mpg.

After a refill the trip computer indicated 587 miles for a full tankful with an average consumption of 54.9 mpg.

Now here’s the crunch! - the actual fuel I put into the tank indicated an average of 51.4 mpg

There’s a possibility I didn’t fully fill the tank on the previous fill-up so to double check I’m going to be visiting the exact same pump number next time to see if I get the same error.

Not exactly sure how smart the on-board computer is but since is has sensors for both fuel use and fuel used it should be able to re-calibrate itself so it should be interesting to see if it does.

My Punto usually overread by a few mpg. I don't think it can be an exact science in the way Fiat do it. I'd expect the ECU would know exactly how much fuel had been used, (and pass this information on), but then I'm no automotive engineer.

Hi Argonought / Otis / Gav,

Thanks for posting your findings – I’ve been meaning to calculate my “actual” consumption (just out of interest!) for months, but have never got round to it yet. I’ll need to fill up at the weekend, so I’ll try working out what my consumption is compared with the computer – it seems like the computers are a bit optimistic?

Now that the “fuel crisis” is over I have to confess to driving a bit more enthusiastically, I’m now averaging about 50.8 mpg over about 1400 miles, although my current tankful is 48.1mpg (I’ve been leaving for work a bit later!). Still not bad, it’s just a pity we in the UK get shafted on the price of diesel – when I was in France in the summer it was around €1 (70p) a litre.

Sorry for the late reply, mine is running at just over 120HP now.

I usually get with conserative driveing...with the odd spurts of foot buried into the carpet around 52mpg...but more often enough with my usual driving style. I average about 47mpg.

My average is 7litres per 100KM (quite high due to work been 5Km away from home) but I can get 5.5litres per 100km on long road. My mileage is only 4400KM. I will be driving to Joburg (1400KM each way) in November so will check again.
