I reported my stilo as running roughly to my dealer .... he reckoned the oil level was seriously low??? I've been checking the oil level every week and the dipstick has never moved from the top of the indented part .... when I got it back from the dealer according to the dipstick it is now overfilled ??? As it is no longer within the indented bit .....but actually over it by almost a cm???

Are you saying it's running smoothly now and the cure was just putting oil in even though you check your oil regularly? That's sounds unbelievable.

If it's over the max level now then they've obviously put too much in. Did they check it on a 1 in 5 hill or something? Overfilling oil is a common mistake as the oil is almost colourless

If you had VERY low or no oil it would sound terrible and be doing serious damage. You'd feel it, hear it and probably even smell it isn't right.

Putting too much oil in a car can be just as damaging to the engine as putting too little in.
If the rough sound is still there, I would get rid of the excess oil. :chin:

It's running smoother now ???? Will just have to keep an eye on it ... as according to the dealer the oil consumption is quite high .... I haven't quite made 15,000 miles yet

The oil consumption on my Stilo is unreal. It uses 10 times the oil my 1.6 Bravo does and has done since I bought it. But then, my stilo has been riddled with faults so it does not suprise me if the engine is screwed too. Are you getting the 'low oil pressure' message often?

Don't check the oil with a cold engine or a hot engine! Let it run for 5 minutes to warm, then leave it 30mins to cool a bit then check it! Perfect conditions. Also check it while the car is parked on level ground, not just front to back, side to side too!

The handbook says leave it 5 mins after turning the engine off....is it best to wait 30 then?

every time i turn the engine on i get stop engine warning on dash and it sais oil pressure fault its out of waranty now anyone have any ideas!!

The fact you're losing huge amounts of oil AND you have low oil pressure doesn't sound good. Somewhere oil is escaping and if you can't see an external leak then it's going internal and out the exhaust. Can't run an engine with low oil pressure without doing damage so it's going to need some work by the sound of it

Possible internal oil seal or head gasket or oil pump problems but that's purely a guess

Oh sorry I thought you were choppertwo and losing copious amounts of oil too. Is it a feature of yellow Stilos?

If it's saying low oil pressure then check oil level and check the warning is correct first. Done an oil filter change recently?

5 mins will probably be ok, just so long as the engine is only just warm, not fully heated up. 5-10 mins should be enough to let the oil level to settle in the sump but not every drop drain back (like if you left it overnight before checking).

I check my oil pretty frequently, thats from owning a mini! Need to check the oil frequently!
