Hi

Ive just been looking on the autotrader site and ive found a stilo 1.8 stilo 3 door for £5995. Its and 03 registration, but the only problem is that its done 51000 or 61000 miles. The salesperson was a bit unsure when he told me. Is this alot of miles for a stilo, or will it handle them without a problem.

My second question is petrol or diesel. Im really unsure as to what to go for. Ive got £6000 to play with and both of them are in the price range and insurance isnt a killer. Does the 1.9 sound like a tractor or is it a quiet engine. My mate bought an audi diesel the other week and it sounds like an agricultural vehical from the outside, but quiet from the inside. Dont get me wrong it goes like stink and he was gettin 55mpg doing 100 mph which was really impressive. Can the 1.8 be remapped or tuned in any way? because with the JTD ive heard that it can be remapped and a bigger turbo put on it to reach 190bhp.

As much info would be great. Im going to the calledonian fiat dealer in warrington tonight so a quick response would be great.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy

The 1.9JTD can be easily remapped to 155bhp, and onto 170bhp with a new exhaust system - not sure of the 190bhp comment, however...sounds too costly.

The 1.8 is less tunable, like the 1.6.

Have you had a chance to test-drive both cars? Personally, I own both types, but it is all down to driving preference.

not had a chance to test drive any of them yet. going to go and test drive the 1.8 tonight, but its really hard to find any stilos around here. Found a JTD the other night, but its 65 miles away and thats a bit of a treck to have a test drive. Think the major problem with this one is going to be the mileage.

If i were you i'd go for the diesel. It's got quite a lot of power and more importantly it's got it right down where you need it so you havn't gotta work to race (guess i'm kind of a lazy speeder!!) and you can remap it, in which case it'll fly and even get better mpg!!!
Fianally the mpg is excellen, i've jut been on holiday, done 1600km (goin really fast!!!!) and my av. consumption was 6.5l/100km (don't know what that is in mpg but believeme it's really really low for the speeds and places i have driven!!)

65 miles isn't a trek to test drive a car. Big decision your making. But will you find a JTD for £6000 ok?

As for 51 or 61000 being easily covered in the petrol Stilo, i'd think pretty much any modern petrol will cover 100,000 easily if driven well, if its been spanked for every single mile then the clutch could be knackered.

Petrol will sound better when cained, will be quieter when cold. Diesel undoubedly more powerful, but over a lesser rev range, noisy when cold, but far more economic.

heh, well you did travel to dundee for your stilo, I only went as far as kirkcaldy ;)

If you can get a jtd then go for it really. Best way to put it :)

It should be against the law to fit diesels in Italian gars!! The 1.8 is a good engine. If you're after a 3 door, go to JCS Kegworth and you could have mine for £5995. It's immac and has done 36K miles. Should have had the recall done and had aircon fixed by now too. JCS - not your typical Fiat dealer :)

I was wanting a rosewood red one, but it was gone, and just to make things utterly typical, when I picked up the sky blue one, a rosewood one was there for sell!!

Not that sky blue is bad, I just fanced the rosewood :)

Went down to my local fiat dealer and he told me that he didnt have a 1.8 or 1.9 in stock. Then he realised that one of the guys who worked there had gone home in one. So instead he tried to sell me the schumacher limited edition. (yea right, as if ive got 18k in my back pocket)

Stu was that the M-Jet with 6 speed gearbox? Nice car, great engine and the suspension and driving position in the 147 is that bit more sporty than the Stilo.

I almost bought one a couple of weeks back but the boot was too small. I have a little one on the way so boot space will become all important I reckon.

I have to say diesel (even if it's "just" the 115bhp version).
A fellow member in Fiat Club Denmark has a 115bhp stilo and he just had it tuned, and though he didn't go all the way to 155bhp (he ended up with 140bhp and 314nm) it's still very quick. Very compareble to the multijet, the main difference is how the power comes. In the multijet it's comes from lower rpm than the tuned 115 and the multijet is not as brutal as the 115.

So to sum up: i say go for the diesel (y)

But that's no big surprise considering what i drive :D

No, I don't think it was a M-Jet - only 5 speed box for starters - the driving position was lovely, and it really handled well - on on 195s as well, 15"ers...

Makes me want a 159/Brera even more so now ;) [although will still buy that as petrol :p]

Depends on what you want really, the JTD is undoubtedly the best combination of performance and economy, and if you like the way a diesel drives (I do (y)) then great.

It's not for everyone though, as you've seen on here many are die hard petrol fans, but personally the 1.8 wouldn't offer enough performance (if any!!! ;) ) over the JTD to warrant the drop in economy. If I were buying a Stilo again now I'd personally discount the 1.6 and 1.8 for these reasons, either getting a 1.4, for an out and out saving, the 2.4 for out and out  factor, or the the JTD (again) for finding the middle ground.

Plus the JTD is very tunable if that's what you want.

Saying all that, you might find a terrific deal on a well specced 1.8.

Aint nothin wrong with the 1.6 :p, it was always the model the motoring press advised you went for. Can honestly say tht i have never been disappointed by it. Nice n revvy, cruises really well and doesn't guzzle the petrol as much as you'd think....on average it's only a little heavier on fuel than my 1.4i zectec engine in my fiesta was. Fuel economy should get better now i've racked up few thousand miles on the clock.

anyways, the 1.6 has been discontinued from the 3 door and 5 door hatches and only available on the multiwagon.
1.4 or jtd is the options on 5 door while 1.4, 1.8 and jtd in the 3 door!

hey,

i had been toying the old 1.8 petrol or 1.9 dieasel problem for a while. In the end i got a good deal on a 1.8 petrol so i got that, my thinking was this - the 1.9 is a nice car and is gud on fuel but u have to pay more for it in the first place(when i was looking it was about £600 more) compared to a 1.8 petrol, plus getting ur hands on one in gud nick is a hard job. The petrol one is cheaper to buy, if you drive like noddy and grandad it around then u can get good econonmy(i think a few guys have got an average mpg of 47.8mpg on here, whihc beats my average 29.8mpg). Problem is no one buys a 1.8 to drive it like noddy! I am told that if u do over 12k miles a year u will be better off with the 1.9!!In hind sight if i had to choose between 1.8 and the 1.9 i wud probly go for the dieasel if i cud get my hands on one at the same sort of price as the 1.8.
