Hi,

I have been having a problem like a squelching sound when reaching 1200RPM and its worsened now to even lower at idle.

I have been diagnosed with a faulty bearing on my AC pump which is not possible to replace. Been told to replace the pump but that is too expensive and not really worth it. I have been reading the forum and saw something so now instead of replacing the AC pump I was going to try a shorter belt bypassing the AC.

Problem is I cannot find the right measurement and was wondering if anyone knows?

Also what is the actual length of the original belt?

I did get a belt from a motorfactor which was too short but I returned it without measuring and sort of fell out with the guy in there! Long story. :/

Also does anyone know if the crankshaft pulley is ribbed or not. I have a 1.9JTD but the crankshaft pulley is not ribbed. It does have the lines running round it but they are not grooved, in fact they are pretty flat and I have been told this is an incorrect pulley.

Thanks in advance :)

Recently replaced my aux belt on 1.9jtd with air con , genuine belt from fiat that they gave me was 6pk1270..the first part of the belt number relates to the 6 grooves which are as they should be so is in fact you have the correct pulley system as all other pulley's such as crank pulley and alternator pulley are similar ,do not listen to other advice you have been given on the pulley system.
Understand what you are trying to do in shortening the belt, though do not know what length belt you will get away with, though you would have the automatic belt tensioner which will have to be kept in place as no other way to tension belt.
Only way I can think of trying a shorter belt is to remove wheel arch liner and attempt to use some sort of string or thin wire to run round the route you wish to fix shorter belt and take a measurement from that, would do that with old belt system in place if possible as the tensioner will be in a position to get a better read of the length when it comes to replacing the belt a suitable spanner/socket on the tensioner bolt and a good leverage will slacken the tensioner off to aid remove/replace of the belt..if you manage to find a suitable belt of the 6pk type be good to post your results, you may find that you have to replace air con compressor with an idler pulley depending on shorter belt routing or it may route via the existing idler pulley ..good luck
Just so long as you are sure it is the air con pulley that is faulty, have you tried a little squirt of water on the belt to see if screech vanishes and you not just have a worn belt, when my belt started screeching I replaced a cheap belt that had not long been fitted after new tensioner and idler pulley also, when I put a quality belt gen fiat item which are not cheap it cured the screech at low revs and all nice and quiet from the aux belt area

thanks, i think it was a 1270 or 1253. So long ago since I been on here, the belt fitted but didn't solve the problem.

should have tried your idea!

Ended up selling the car now.
