Technical ECU - Don't Jump Start!

Ok didnt read the whole thread so forgive me if i am duplicating another thread.

Linking 2 batteries together CAN fry the ECU.

A lot of modern cars have to have specific batteries designed for that model as they require a certain ampage for the very sensative electronic sensors.
Even putting on the wrong amped battery can, over time, fry the ECU.

A lot of garages (if they are worth there salt) will advise you to go to a dealer if you have a car like this (i.e. the renault megane, laguna) as apposed to giving you the wrong battery.

They dont cost anymore than normal but could save you a small fortune in the long run. (y)

I had to get the AA out yesterday after my battery was flat (Fiats AA coverage). Amazingly the guy arrived in like literally 4 mins!! Very impressive.

He started it using a rapid boost pack, is this likely to cause an issue?

Also, when he arrived he did a drain test and found something was taking 1.2v off the battery (normal is up to 0.3V apparently) He checked all the interior lights etc to see if they were draining the bateery and there were no problems. He was at a total loss. Then suddenly the drain dropped to 0.18v!

Has any once else experienced this situation? The AA man couldn't offer a solution and said he'd probably take it to a dealer at some point (He was obviously a comedian)

Anyone tried one of those cig lighter to cig lighter leads that are advertised in Argos? Looks a nice clean solution to hoisting up the bonnet.

What do you mean? Almost all cars use lead /acid batteries. What's special about a Stilo battery? A pulse charger can no more "revive" a battery than any other battery charger. Despite claims of the charger manufacturers, there is no proof that pulse chargers work any better than constant voltage chargers
A pulse charger is more intelligent in that it reads the battery voltage every now and again but that's about it.Ghost errors are often caused by a low battery but the cure is a recharge or a new battery

Better late than never:rolleyes: knew had info somewhere!

'Pulse chargers can recognise & recover over discharged or sulphated batteries which cannot be recharged using conventional battery chargers, certain pulse chargers have added features to the software including algorithms specifically for certain batteries that namely Ford use (n.b. can also be found in some stilos) and are also capable of charging lead/attimony,lead/calcium & silver/calcium batteries.
Small or partially discharged batteries are automatically limited to 50% max current in order to minimise plate surface charging & heating. When battery reaches the preset gassing voltage the charger switches automatically to constant voltage mode. The calculated proportional timing ensures sufficent gassing to prevent stratification, mix the green hydrometer indicator but minimises electrolyte loss and gas emission.'

Hope that clears it up(y)
