hello chaps.

my JTD 1.9 stilo 3 door is leaking coolant from the rear of the engine - big time..

I put the motor on axle stands this evening and could not pin point the leak.

It appears to be coming from above oil sump and dripping down.

Now the issue is, how on earth can you get behind the engine of a stilo?

There is no space from the top of the engine bay (fuel lines in way), and from underneath there is too much stuff in the way to even see where the leak is coming from.

Any suggestions to confirm where the leak could be originating from, and how on earth can you access the rear of the engine without dropping out engine?

Cheers.

no idea, there isn't much room behind there.

Are you SURE its actually leaking from the back? The water pump is on the left as you look at the engine from the front, maybe that is failing and leaking out the cambelt cover to the rear?

Only thing I can think of is the expansion bottle and any pipe work connected, you could try starting near top of engine as possible see is any moisture on hands, or over near egr valve if remember there is the pipes to cabin heater and some coolant pipes round there as the thermostat is that side too, dabbing some tissue will give you an idea if any dampness in area to help locate leak, start near top and work down n around..mmm used to know a lady like that but that is a story for another day.

Lol .
I have removed the fuel filter and looked down and the two large coolant pipes running into the car look fine from above and under the engine bay. I have pressured the system by connecting easybleed system to header tank and the rusty water appears to be coming behind the crank shalf sensor and running*down the sump. I cannot see above the sensor as I think the alternator is in the way.

Do u have photos of where the thermostat housing is located so I can eliminate that.
Thanks

Thermostat located right hand side of engine block with all the thicker pipe work from Radiator..looking at from front of car bonnet open..no pic for you, though not too difficult to miss, you may have to start taking a few parts off or slackening from mounting to see if you get a better view down back of engine block, egr valve and fuel ducting box are all squeezed in around there.

Hi
I believe the issue a related to a corroded core plug.
Does anyone have any images of the JTD engine showing all the core plugs?
I have tried looking on eper but cannot find out what category is core plugs. cheers

ive had a look also for you cant see them either.
if you just want location try this and zoom over pic of rear face of engine.
not your car but block may be suitably similar and plug location also?

Hi, thanks for your help..

Managed to find using an endoscope that the last core plug (as you are looking at the engine furthest to the left)was shot!.
The mechanic said it was an absolute nightmare to get to, he had to remove pretty much everything to the side of the engine bay (water bottle , cam belt, etc) as there is a shield at the top of the engine preventing access from the top.
