Well just got a quote from glyn hopkins in chelmsford.... and they wanted £390 including vat to change my glow plugs... I was pretty shocked to hear that thought more like £200, anyone else know where I can get them done cheaper in essex?

thanks

Robin

do it yourself, fiddly but do able.
When i had a glow plug go my fuel consumption went up, im not sure why maybe its because the glow plugs constantly pre heat - others have reported the same on here.
there is a good guide on testing the plugs on here, i personally decided to change the lot as when one goes the others usually follow for me.
If you decide you cannot do it, get a independant garage / mechanic to do the job, you will save a bundle.
D.A motors in wickford should be cheaper if you want to give them a call.

My fuel consumption is the same as it always has been but my pre heat fault has been there since i got the car, i have a volt meter but never used it, i need to crack it out and check, i want to do it myself but not sure i want to risk it, snapping a plug would make me cry lol and i have snapped a spark plug before and that took 3 days to get out.... i spoke to a independent garage today and they said to leave it alone.... but i want it fixed lol.... read some right horror stories about glow plug removal, what tools did you use Roy? i have plus gas to soak them and i would get it nice and hot before starting to do them, will give d.a a call too.... i was hoping around the £150 mark, i already have a full set of glow plugs in the boot

I've replaced two on my JTD, both easy if done with patience & care. Access is the key, 1/4" socket extensions & UJ couplers, plus forceps.

rat20v , Do it your selth .

easy steps . if the car isnt used daily or do it the night before

Unplug the glow plugs and spray some Oven cleaner on the were the threads Screw in to the head . and leave for a while for it to bite in , , next morning give it another dose , the oven cleaner bites in to all the grime and crap * WARNING* it is costic *SP* so if you get it on your hands get it washed off as soon as poss ,

and if you are doing it , just becarefull when doing it , as if you go steady on it , you will be able to feel if its gonna snap , the garage will just go " hes signed the paper , so what if they snap"

Access to plug 1-2 are a little harder to get at , 3-4 are so easy to do if you have small hands like me its easy to do :)

i got plug 2-3-4 done on my bro`s M jet basicly the same engine and i got them done with in 20 mins

Its not daily, just a weekend toy, and something i use when i go mountain biking, ok some good tips here will have to get some extra tools... but i have alot of tools already i just need the wobble extender.... ok so i will check them over and then see about doing them myself....

Yes, soak with plusgas or similar first. Gentle, firm force. Once you get it to turn a little, tighten and loosen the plug in stages so that the threads are gradually cleared.
