Hi,

I'm new too this and not particularly techy so please bare with me.

So, this morning I started my Stilo 54 plate 1.9 Diesel JTD after having not driven it for 10 days due to not needing to. It usually starts fine even when not used whilst away on holiday.

This time it didn't start, bump started it and all seemed ok. Took it for a spin (2miles) to try and give it a bit of charge. 5 mins after bump starting it (whistle driving) all the dials went to 0 including petrol and heat. They they reappeared but it had reset the clock etc...

Then ALL the lights on the dash lit up and the dials stopped again. At this point I had stopped driving it but hadn't stopped the engine at any point. Half of the lights were not constantly on, including some of the light ones even though the lights where not switched on?!

Now, 90% of the lights are now on constantly and still no dials when the car is switched on/running. I remember before I attempted to start the car initially I noticed that one of the indicator lights (on dash) was on even though I hadn't even put the keys in the ignition which was probably why the battery was dead.

Now, even when the car is off and locked both indicator lights are constantly (not flashing), so are the full beam lights and the dipped beams (on the actual dash and not the lights themselves).

Car drives fine other than this.

I had someone check the charge on the battery and it's fine even though it's never actually been changed. But apparently it's working fine, holding and sending charge. Someone's checked the fuses near the battery, they are fine. I've tried disconnecting the battery to see if that would spring it into life - nothing.

Any ideas?

I've been told to trickle charge the battery for 24hours whilst its out of the car.

Supposedly this will reset / refresh the car. Does this sound right?

in most cases this won't work - these clusters tend to get faulty after years.
I can repair it for you (did lots ot them) but you would have to send it to the Netherlands - further info by PM if interested.....

Hi,

Turns out this didn't fix it long term. The car drove fine a for a few days then as I was driving I'd lose the dash completle for a few seconds. It would then make a kind of griding noise (think it may be the electrics resetting) and then the dash would come back on. The journey time was about half an hour and it done this 6 times.

The next day I lost that dash completley, no dial at all or petrol/heat. However there weere a few lights on the instruments constantly on and there was a ticking noise on the dash.

So, I've just been to a mechanic to change the battery. He connected the poss/neg's together to refresh/zero the electrics. Put a new battery in, undone the main fuses and sprayed them with WD40.

Started the car and it seemed to have sorted it as the dash was now working.

Untill I started to drive away.......... Whenever I go above 5-10 MPH the dial then goes straight to full speed (150 MPH).

I don't think it's anything to do with the battery, but I changed it as it hasn't been since new so it needed doing anyway.

Any ideas anyone? I think it's going to need a new cluster.

i'm from the Netherlands so i don't know a company in the UK - i could repair it for a fair price but you would have to pay the shipping costs twice and have some patience...

The dash has now gone again. The clock display is stuck on the oil check and only part of the clock display is lit. I need to get the cluster changed or rebuit.

Ring ur local scrappies or check evil bay for a replacement cluster. Not sure wat way the mileage works on these, im sure its prob duplicated on the ecu so a new cluster may need reprogramming to match. Not sure if multiecuscan is capable, im sure some googling would tell you. Ive seen a few for breaking on ebay tho.... Try googling cluster repair too, im sure theres ppl in uk cud do it for you

Thanks, I've contacted a few companies. Looking at about £170. Seen one on eBay for the same car as mine (1.9 diesel JTD) for £80 but its an estate car. Mines a hatch. Anyone known if this will still fit? They eBay cluster is apparently the same year as mine too

Any cluster from a Stilo diesel will fit. Try to get one with a lower mileage that your original, because you can only adjust the mileage upwards.
.

The one on eBay states milage unknown. Are you sure you cab only do it upwards?

yes i did it before on alfas and fiats with the fiat ecu scan (now called multiscan) and you can only add mileage, not subtract
also ecu reader was just showing in Kmh not Mph on screen so you got to double check what you typing in(y)
