All you Fiat Stilo owners with suspect suspension problems beware!
If you have any warranty left check this out:-
I have had a Fiat Stilo Multiwagon since May 2003 and although it has great styling, great equipment, is very practical and was superb value for money. The ride and suspension problems I have encountered have been disastrous.
The first problem was with the rear suspension, when I went over a bump or sunken manhole in the road the suspension made a loud metallic bang, this turned out to be the suspension bushes, which according to the main dealer were not wide enough for their housing and were moving from side to side and had worm badly.
When the dealer under warranty replaced these bushes, they told me this would have cost £800 because they had to take off the whole suspension bed to replace the bushes. According to the dealer these have now been replaced with modified bushes which are wider and harder material. I have since heard that fiat issued a warning to its dealer about this problem and someone told me Fiat had a recall on the same problem. Good job my car was still under warranty.
Since having this problem, someone else told me that Fiat had a similar problem on the front suspension, so when I had the car in for another recent problem, which I thought was a very noisy wheel bearing and this turned out to be a second broken coil spring in less than four years. I asked the dealer to check the front suspension bushes as the car was riding a bit rough. This turned out to be the offside front bush had worn and to my dismay when I received the bill for this work they had replaced the front suspension wishbone at a cost of £100.17. When I questioned this the dealer told me that this was because the bush cannot be bought or replaced separate.
It seems to me that Fiat have done a great job on the Stilo compared to past Fiats but they have built in designs which make it easier and cheaper for them to build but add a phenomenal cost to replace or repair, which is more likely to happen when the car is out of warranty.
I intend writing to Fiat UK about this matter.

Sorry to drag up an old thread,,, but not wanting to start a new one...

got a very slight creak/click about 10 and 2 o clock on the steering... located it as the front upper suspension mounts.... sounds very much like the spring is sticking as it turns on itself...

got my waxoil at the ready.. but whats the best places to waxoil it???

same noise is heard as the car goes over small bumps and sleepin' coppers.. but doesnt do it when dropping down curbs and so on.... had a pry bar on everything but nothing has any play... only done 32k so shouldt have any anyway IMO..

Cheers!

What I do is:

  1. Jack it up
  2. Remove the road wheel
  3. Use an Axle stand or other support just in case
  4. Now use your hand to apply a good coating on the bottom of the spring. Best to remove any lodged gravel and dirt first. Take care to check if the spring has broken (they tend to break at the very bottom) and don't interfere with it too much if it has as it could be quite dangerous
Whilst doing this you might as well coat all rubber bushes and the like which look a bit 'dry'

Cheers Argo... just thought i would check... will have a look at the springs.. only recently did an overhaul on the brakes, wirebrushed and sprayed all the gubbings such as linkages and wishbone.. everything seemed in order... just this annoyin creak... but its intermittant.. there one day gone the next....

thanks for the info... just hope its dry and warmer tomorrow... get it sorted before the real bad weather kicks in!

right found the problem... its the top mount of the front drivers side sus strut... as you turn the steering the turret at the top seems to catch then release.... to put it another way... sring catcher end turns 30 degrees..... top turret end turns 10 degrees.. stops then jumps to 30 degrees... is it just a case of lubing up or is it more a case of new top mount???

cheers!

is it just a case of lubing up

cheers!

Mmmm glad to see you conducting your self correctly and having safe sex

The rubber top mounts will after a period of time go hard so in the long run "Lubing up" ;) will only be a short term way of solving the problem ..and eventually you will have to get down and dirty ;) and renew to top mounts ..I did the both on my 5dr and the problem was resolved :)

Cheers PNL, going to get the front wheels off tomorrow and get a good fumble around the mount to see what i can find,

might eventually have to replace them... might even consider some uprated shocks and springs after new year:)
