hello, i'm interested in buying a used fiat stilo... probably a 1.6 or 1.8 petrol 3 door (since they cost a lot less than the diesel ones)... i wanted to know about these engines' performances... i read that the 1.6 stilo is not so fast and does not have s good pick up. 1.8 is better but quite thirsty and doesn't fly as 133 hp should. is this correct? anything else i should consieder when buying a stilo?

the other candidates are the old focus 1.6 petrol and maybe the new megane 1.6. have any of you had a chance to compare the stilo with these? (don't just tell me something like "the megane is sh*t" please ;))

PS consider i am now driving a 1.6 Tipo

go for the 1.8
magnificient car and the 133bhp is all there....
any further question just ask me or check my previous posts
thanks :D

Well i have a 1.6 active sport and i have read the posts saying that its performance isnt the best, but honestly, i have no compaints performance wise. The car has never felt like it has struggled in anyway and the 1.6 has a lovely growl when your accelarating hard on the motorway. Really cannot fault the engine at all. It pulls nice, its smooth and has plenty of power in the 3-5k RPM range this is where it likes to take off.

1.6 costs me about £40 to fill and is good for around 400 miles (more if you spend alot of time on nice flowing dual carriageways and motorways. You'll see a forum thread on fuel consumption which has been pretty active at the moment, i drive in a pretty stop start urban environment and im getting 29.7mpg which is reasonably good for a car of its size

Insurance is pretty cheap too i believe mines is a group 5 so it definitley isnt going to rook you to insure.

As far as the focus and megane go forget it, they're common as muck and i have left both models you mentioned sitting in a cloud of dust, the 1.6 can definitly move quickly off the traffic lights, no problems with pick up at all.

I know alot of people will say go for the 1.8, but i love my 1.6, i cant justify a 1.8 because of the ammount of town driving i do, it just didn't make sense.

the 1.8lt is actually 141ps and surpisingly fast..go 4 it..

Out of the two, go for the 1.8 - not driven one personally [I have driven the 1.6, not that impressed tbh], but the reports from all its owners give it thumbs up....

Not quite like an abarth though eh? :D (y)

Oh of course not but then again the though of a 2.4 litre lump burning petrol in the traffic jams i sit in, i'd need to tow an oil tanker behind me. And that wouldnt be good for the old fuel economy.

Now if i was on the open road all the time i would have opted for the other car i was looking at which just so happened to be a 1yr old abarth. But i am too easily tempted to floor it so i though i'd go for the keep your license mobile :)... this time, next car i buy will be an abarth tho :) I like my toys

I have a 1.8, and i recon it is faster than the megane and focus! With the 1.8 you also get the asr, take that off it makes quite a bit of difference! For those times when you want to go faster :D I fink it is quite fast considering the car size, etc... You could go for a k&n induction kit and full through exhaust for beta pick up, is 1 option! and for beta handling you go for some eibach springs?! Also the 1.8 averages around 32-35mpg all the time, no matter how you drive! Which i fink is quite a decent mpg :) Erm.... best thing to do is take of both of em out and give em a good thrashing and you can see the difference between the two! the top end for the 1.8 is stated aroun126-128mph; but on a test track ive had jus ova 130mph ;) (and thats a completely standard engine; i dont have my k&n on yet and waiting to get the exhuast done! not that wud make ne difference to top end tho)

if youre lookin for a hot hatch beast, maybe look at a renault clio 182 with the cup suspension! I drive ours quite alot and wud recomend if you looking for something that really does fly; but be expected to pay high insurance cost; were as the 1.6/1.8 stilo fall in group 5-7 insurance! (and the interior is rather dated/plastic and blam)

on the 1.6 asr is an optional, on the 1.8 is mandatory :D
the 1.8 is always a dynamic, this explains something, 1.8 active does not exist, 1.6 active exists
larger tyres, 1.8 has got 205 minimum (1.6 has got 195 only)
engine with timing variator, smoother driving, only on the 1.8
1.8 is euro 4, 1.6 is only euro 3 (emissions)
exhaust system is superior with double lambda
drive by wire throttle (1.6 too)
close coupled double exhaust
variable induction
dynamic version only for the 1.8 , this means lots of extras as standard on all 1.8
better brakes and larger discs at the front
you would not get the same on the 1.6
the 1.8 gets also max extreme care by Fiat in Cassino as it is produced in the same dept of Abarths, in fact also the steering system is the Abarth's one but only on the 1.8, the 1.6 is produced with the rest... (y)

Maybe, but you could look at it like this too, the 1.6 has less things that can go wrong (y) cheaper tyres (y) and cheapers discs and shoes (y) Most likely cheaper exhaust to replace (y) and looks just the same (y)

Good Times

I read the 1.6 was the one to go for on the what car report .. Its suposed to be smother more efficiant and cheaper to run than the 1.8.

It did influence may descision when I was looking for a car and I found mine with 17" wheels, skirts in the dynamic spec, so with regards to the looks I was happy.

If you want the faster of the two go for the 1.8 simple - If there are other factors like running costs, parts, insurance etc it maybe worth considering the 1.6.

happy shopping

My 1.6 Dynamic also comes with ASR, so dont just use that as a factor.

And so does my 1.6 Active (even the lowest of the low have little switchey things n buttons ya know) :p

My 1.6 is my first non-derv and its fantasic, once the 16v bit has kicked about 3k revs that is. And I can drag over 400 miles out of her fuel tank too, which aint bad as she's meant to be 'one of the lesser economically sound'.

And nothing has gone wrong with her for a few weeks too (y) (Touching as much wood in sight)

At the end of the day .... If you want Speed, out of the two go for the 1.8 - It really is that simple.

Most of us here love their Stilos, Go buy one :D (just make sure you get a good warenty  ).

Don't get me started on remaps tho Stu

I spend 7hrs a day in city center traffic and get 28mpg avg.The abarth with the selespeed is great because of the auto option when in traffic and has so much lowdown grunt that it tootles about in 4th half the time. The powers there when you want it but its easy to srive slowly unlike say a civic typeR which wants to rev all the time the abarth is happy playing grandad driver then hit the A roads and hear it scream.Dont be a poof, get a abarth.

(y) the 1.6 is fantastic too
my post wanted to be sarcastic in response to the one about the asr on the 1.6
there are several differences between the 1.6 and 1.8 which are not only the engine size...only this...i did not want to say that the 1.6 was crap...it is actually a great fantastic car...but the 1.8 is slightly better...but not as good as the abarth of course:)..only this...
