Based on a 1.9JTD Estate model, 2006. Is it true a garage has to replace the water pump as well as the cambelt, as opposed to just the cambelt? I'm being quoted "275 for the job, is this realistic as it seems high.
 
It doesn't *have* to be changed, but if there's any sign it could be on the way out, it makes sense to do it with the cambelt as it runs off the cambelt. I'm not sure how they've managed to come to the conclusion it needs to be changed if they haven't looked at it yet :/ I'd get a second opinion... sounds like this guy is determined to make as much money from the job as possible.
 
Any Fiat fitted with the 1.9JTD I would recommend, no insist the water pump is renewed. Best to pay a extra £30-40 than look for a decent second hand engine.

Heed your garages advice and the price is ok.
 
Are the 1.9 water pumps particularly prone to failure?

On early JTD water pumps, the plastic impeller was prone to fall off inside the engine. Didn't cause any direct damage, but the subsequent overheating caused by lack of water circulation could if the engine wasn't switched off as the temperature gauge rose.

For any engine that has a water pump driven by the timing belt, it's always best practice to replace the pump with the belt kit. If you only replace the belt kit and the water pump start leaking later, you've got to replace the belt kit all over again.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind :) Got the cambelt to do if this cold starting problems sorted! It's an 02 plate so likely got the plastic impeller if its the original pump. Do all the replacement pumps have metal impellers now then or will it be another plastic one?
