Hi guys. New on here. I've got a stilo multiwagon. It's the dynamic model. The heater on it is playing up. Sometimes it blows nice hot air, but sometimes just blows cold even when on high. Any ideas.

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

Try the climate control reset procedure:

The AUTO and MONO buttons must be pressed simultaneously within 40 seconds of the ignition being turned to the ON position in order to activate this procedure. A few seconds later a figure will appear on the display which will count down to indicate the time remaining before the start of the procedure. At the same time (i.e. whilst the count down is taking place) the previous self-learning status is signalled on the display:

'1' flashes if the previous self-learning procedure failed
'0' indicates that the previous self-learning procedure was successful

This procedure is not carried out if at least one of the buttons is released whilst the figure on the left hand side is not zero
.

I've done the reset but still the same. Any other ideas. I don't want to go to fiat to get stung.

I would recon, if you haven't already, it's best to check for an air lock within the coolant system. Although it's not a major job checking/replacing actuators, it's just because it's a back breaker!

Is it dual climate control?

If it's dual control then are you experiencing colder air on one side? If not it could mean both actuators could have failed.

You have to take off the sides of the centre console (these are the sections that have the feet vents). The passenger side requires you to remove cover under the glove box also and, if applicable, the ecu cover. The drivers side requires you to remove the foot rest.

There are a total of x5 actuators. x3 control the screen/centre & feet. The other two control the temperature.

On the passenger side, if you look up along the side of the heating system (bit of a back breaker) you should see white plastic cogs and levers. A total of x4 actuators are on this side, x3 (screen/centre/feet) are up further towards the centre vents and the 4th (temperature) at the level of the glove box.

On the driver side (Right hand drive) there is x1 actuator (temperature) which is at the same level as the passenger side. Think they'll be a bracket in the way slightly for one of the screws.

All the actuators are the same product which are about the size of your palm and mounted with x3no small phillip head screws (brass type colour).

The actuators are a black plastic, rectangle, shallow box shape with rounded edges (bosch, I think), which at one corner there should be a white plastic, hexagoned shaped motor arm extruding about 15mm.

If the hexagoned shaped arm is not on the actuator when removed, then it's broken off on to the lever (also white plastic). This is a fail safe element to prevented major damage to the system.

If you are getting cold on one side and hot on the other then it's the x2no temperature actuators that may be a fault.

Don't think they are overly expensive new, think they may come as a set. Also from a scrap yard from newer model.

If you do end up changing them, then use the Reset Guide posted by Davren #4 once you've changed them. This reconfigure the system.

Tools, from memory, would mainly be screw drivers, allen key, socket set with phillips attacchment, 10 or 13mm sockets.

Hope this helps!

There might be total of 4 actuators, but can't remember (4 or 5).

If you have cold air on one side and hot on the other then it's the actuators for the temperature on the cold side.

Cheers rpm. I may wait till it warms up slightly as its a bit chilly to be messing about in this cold weather.

Rpm yes it's dual climate control. I've herd this is a pain in the arse to sort a air lock. Where are the bleed points on these wonderful little cars.

I think the bleed screw is on the rad, correct me if I'm wrong!

To bleed, I normally start the car and remove the water tank cap, also put the fans on full blast with max temperature. Keep an eye on the water tank just in case it over heats, if it does begin to overheat then replace the cap then switch it off!!

Once the car is hot (temp gauge central) & fan kicks in check the vents, if it's piping then job done, replace the cap.

Also, during & after the process, compare the lower rad pipe temp with others and if it cold you could squeeze & release it a fair few times, to release air, until you feel it getting to the same temp as the other water pipes. Just make sure, as you know, not burn yourself!
