Does anyone know whether a gearbox for the 1.6 Multiwagon would fit a 1.6 normal 5-door hatch?

I've read some of the horror stories here recently about the 1.6 gearbox exploding. Does anyone know whether there are any warning signs before this happens, or does it just happen out of the blue?

The gearboxes are interchangeable with all fiat 1.6 16v cars including the multipla, marea, bravo, Brava doblo, stilo

As long as its reg is after 2001 where fiat changed the shifting mechanism from ROD to CABLES

My 1.6 gearbox ran with no oil for 380miles before I realised that the inner cv boot had split draining all oil :banghead:, got home filled it up with oil and new boor, she still going strong, goes to Santa Pod, Been on track day to Brands hatch and its fine, ofcourse I have a spare box and clutch ready for when it finnaly let's go

Hope that helps :D

The 1.6 I had sounded like I was pulling a metal dustbin behind me when the gearbox went. I got a recon one and 18 months and 5000 miles later it went AGAIN.

its the diff pin that fails on the boxes, ive had two of them go.
if your worried drop the box and remove the diff, get a new pin and replace, job done, other than that i dont think there are any other problems with the box.
both times the pins went around the 50-60,000 mile mark if that give you any bearing.

Can anyone confirm, does this apply to all engine sizes? I need a new gearbox for a 1.4. I had read that it can depend on lots of things, down to the number of doors on the car and/or what factory it was built in. Can it really be as simple as any 1.4 Fiat?

Dont know if it works on the 1.4 engine
The 1.2 is interchangeble wit other 1.2 8v or 16v
the 1.6 is the same
1.8 is the same
