General Adaptive Cruise Control

General Adaptive Cruise Control

theres a connector for it and i seem to remember one of the technical lot (Devran/Decks/someone else) mentioning it was an option... but ive seen other places saying the idea was played with by Fiat but it never came to fruition

I don't think it was ever put into production. I've never seen it or heard of anyone with it.

There's a large section about it in the eLEARN manual but there'a nothing about it in ePER so no idea where you'd get the parts for it.

I've a vague recollection from many years back that someone reported having seen one at a UK dealership. I got the impression it was a one off import.

Unfortunately, I don't think I got much response from the OP when I asked more about.

i feel a little let down if im honest by the manufacturer we all so dearly love!

im gonna go out on a limb and say that IF the connector is fitted then surely somewhere in the ECUs, the info is buried.

like the cruise control option in the main ECU (requiring a seting to be changed with MES) id assume that all the clever trickery was done within the radar node that sits on the front bumper. but as mentioned in alexGS link there would have to be an 'extra' control for the distance setting. im really interested to see how far this thread can go and if any of us can help each other to find a solution to it! im off to have a look at eLEARN to satisfy my curiosity for now and maybe have a quick google.

Perhaps it didn't need a user-defined distance setting? Is it possible the ecu would select an optimum distance to the car in front relative to the speed you're travelling? Just a thought
im guessing not i for one dont think even fiat were that clever!

Is the radar node in the front bumper available to order?
not that i can find on ePER and from other *very few* post dotted around the forum it would seem that it is 'unorderable'

Lol perhaps not ;) even if the adaptive feature only worked at the national speed limit or even from 60mph and above so it only required one setting which become active when the ecu knows the feature is available, like you said with the normal cruise control?

You'd need to pinpoint where the front radar node would connect to before you could really progress with it I'd imagine. Isn't there any Alfa adaptive cruise control parts available? If so the could fit in the Stilo maybe?

so ive had a look and theres not much difference in the 2 systems
this is 'Normal Cruise Control'
ccwiring.jpg

and this is 'ACC'
accwiring.jpg

theres and addition of the M67 (actual radar module), D97 (short circuit coupling), C11 (ground connection) and E8010 (a feed of some description into pin 12 of the the OBDII connector)... theres a line running off H7 (cruise control stalk) but no mention if its any different to the 147 stalk that fits from the Alfas

more to come when i do some more research :D

Oh - that IS interesting!
The cruise control stalk is shown as having a switch with three resistances - configured so the node will see one of three voltages - shown as 'not connected' for the regular cruise control, and connected to that radar module for the ACC. That will be the three-position distance-setting ring, then. The standard control, and the one from the 156 or 147, or even 166, does not have this second ring, but you could make something up at least for test purposes, though it would help to know the resistances (maybe three 1k resistors! - you do need the radar module to connect it to, of course.

The connection to OBD pin 12 makes sense, as that's a K-line used for serial diagnostic connection to 'special purpose' ECUs, such as the hood ECU in my Spider. Therefore, diagnosis would require a KKL-type plug (usually the translucent blue type) wired from pin 7 to pin 12.

It seems to me that the best hope would be to get a radar node from a BMW and work from there. If all the pins were the same function, and it used a CAN connection, there'd be a good chance it would fit in with the Stilo. I have seen that connector in the front-right wheel arch and wondered what it was too, I should now test the wiring and figure out where it goes.

Hopefully the instrument panel node is programmed for it and will come to life once the node puts its signals on the CAN bus...

Off we go now to search the interweb for BMW ACC wiring. Posts like http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11528862&postcount=23 are a good start. I always thought it was known as Radar Cruise Control, but Adaptive Cruise Control makes sense too. Odd that this would be fitted to a 'sporty' model. The Italians weren't known for fitting cup holders and cruise control in their cars, especially not the ones with pretenses of high performance :)

those eLEARN diagrams were from the 1.6 option on my disc... that doesnt mean that they are build specific like ePER though. i wonder if the connector is build specific too as MEP says that his does not have the multiplug but you seem to have found it, it raises the question of if the CC pre-disposition was installed them maybe the ACC loom is included in that build setup...

MEP:- does your car have the D4a connector under the battery box for 'semi pre-disposed' CC setup

edit:- Bosch part number 0 203 000 044...
