hey guys,

no major issues that I am aware of, but i feel compared to most of you, my MPG is poor.

I seem to be averaging 25-36 MPg, this seems to change when i re fuel and reset the counter (i use counter B).

I have a new maf, new MAP, blanked EGR, new air filter and other than that, performance seems spritely and the MPG certainly goes up on long runs. My daily drive is a couple of miles, to and from work, slow to steady traffic, but when i do longer runs between towns and cities, it doesnt improve much. If i go up and down the motorway on longer runs it does go right up to mid to high forties.

ok, anything i can check? I have blanked my EGR in two places onthe EGR itself..i have no warning lights or EML, bit of smoke on hard acceleration but otherwise its clean, everything seems to run nice, but i feel im missing something..??

what engine size is it and when was its last service?? and check for exhaust leaks, correct tyre pressures and tracking and check breaks for binding paul

cheers chaps, sorry, looks like i missed out some important details!!

its a 1.9 JTD 115.

yes, my tracking is out, good point! Tyre pressures correct at something like 37 is it?? whatever it says in the handbook, although i used to have them at 32.

brakes....hmm.....i dont think they are binding BUT, I do need new discs and pads all round, no signs of sticking though, just a bit of squeeling from the low pad wear indicator - but i wont discount this as a possibilty, thanks for pointing it out!

last service was when i bought it about 8 month ago, new oil, oil filter and fuel filter. New air filter also and two new front tyres. Again, the tracking is out I should get that sorted really...but i wouldnt have thought that would drop my MPGs by such a large amount.

Looking at other posts in the forum, members seem to regularly get over 40Mpg while booting it!!

all points i will check, but, anything else? O2 sensors??

could it be just down to the short trip you do to work n back ..does the engine get up to temp in that mileage my jtd can take a while,,and also the trip B consumption will show less if you have car running to defrost in morning ..as you say mileage per gallon goes up to mid 40 on longer run..i do not thrash mine and drive the jtd multi wagon steady returns between 50 and 55 mpg not want to start I get so much to gallon thread..but my average trip is minimum 15miles one way..just few points to take into account

cheers, no its ok, its good to have a record of who gets what. My trip to work is approx 2 to 3 miles, depends which way i go. just about gets to temp. Maybe it is right as it is, but there have been times, same journey, where im getting closer to 39 mpg, and then sometimes it drops to 25, currently its averaging out at 32 but its up and down like a brides nightie. I just figured im missing something simple to get those MPGs up to a more respectable 40 ish..

one thing that does happen though, depending on where i get my fuel, this really affects mpg. I havent topped up yet since doing the second egr plate recently, so it could be that once i put new fuel in, and leave it a few days, it rises back to 37 mpg etc.... :/

would think that 2 to 4 mile it would only just be reaching optimum working temp when you got to work..not sure if diesel are like petrol meaning they use more fuel when cold..
and yes your right cheap supermarket fuel will effect mpg as well as it being winter ..to get a better idea you would have to take for a longer steady run..I just did festive trip to liverpool and back stuck to 60 to 65 with cruise control on motorway and was getting 57mpg at one point..also my wheel psi is 34..you seem to have checked most points of car so would do a steady longer trip first and see what you get obviously do it when you need to go somewhere price of fuel is bad enough ..me I had a pigging mouse chew through fuel line that is between each injector as it is cloth coverd got 3 miles down the road before gauge was dropiing fast..managed to trap the culprit and now have metal braid tube between injectors ,just in case his big mouse brother returns they do not seem to like plain rubber tube just the cloth type tube to make their wee house with.

You won't get any accuracy on such a short journey. one heavy rev, traffic light or other impedance will make loads of difference. I have five miles from many house to the motorway every morning. if I reset the trip before I set off I will show 35mpg max but if I set off and drive 100m through the traffic lights then reset, I can be on 45mpg. There's a five mile downhill stretch on my way home that I can get 80mpg on at 60mph, but if I hit the traffic lights it will be 50...

Ah. I was about to say that if it's an Abarth, then 25-36mpg is OK. Driving mine home 400km the day I bought it, I got 7.8L/100km which is 36mpg, but that was mostly open-road driving. In the week after that driving around town, it returned 9.5L/100km, which is 29mpg.

It's been quite economical for nearly two months since then, as it's been in my garage and hasn't moved. I've also bought another car with a bigger engine, and sold my FIAT 500, which will make my Stilo relatively more economical :D

I did a calculation taking into account depreciation and insurance, and worked out that I would have to cover several times my annual 12,000 kilometres before the Stilo would become more expensive to run than a FIAT 500.
