Hi,
I have a 2003 1.9 Stilo estate and it has had a couple of bouts of dying in traffic and not restarting for a while.
Both times have been at idle and the car won't restart and displays a 'loose connection' message and then an 'engine fault' message.
The first time on tuesday the car restarted 30 mins later and within the day it had stopped displaying the 'engine fault' message.
Today it displayed an extra message of 'water in fuel filter' once and then not again. This time I also had the dial needles trying to go backwards when I turned the engine over. I left the car for a few hours and it has started and restarted ok.
Any ideas what it could be or things to check over the weekend?

could be CKP sensor, affected by heat so that might explain why it restarts a short while later. Other things could be battery and terminals, but id be leaning towards the CKP...

Engine faults will clear following three clean restarts of the engine. The water in the fuel filter error would be something to double check. Simple enought on petrols but not sure about diesel fuel systems if I'm honest.

I would go with clivvy's advice as well, get the the crank sensor checked for security/ correct gap.

Seems as though its a DIY job. Any idea what fiat charges for a sensor as they seem to be about £20-£30 for non OEM parts?

No point going to Fiat as they will always charge way over the odds for the part. Carparts4less is the site I think you get a discount through the forum as well, not quite sure though

Bought the Sensor for £24 from a local motor factors and its now in place so we'll see if it improves the reliability.

fingers crossed, you should know as soon as it hits normal running engine temp.

Running sweet now and fuel economy seems better too.

CKP will certainly affect economy as it affects engine timing, fuel injection etc etc
