My OH’s Stilo has a gearbox leak (it’s a 1.2 with the six speed box). The leak appears to be coming from the top selector rod as it exits the gearbox. From looking at the electronic Stilo manual there appears to be a seal here, but could it actually leak from here? As in does the oil get that high when its sloshing about, if not is there any other common places it can leak from?

Sadly it's not over filled as when I changed the engine oil a couple of weeks back I checked the gearbox oil level and had to top it. I've seen what looks like a drip on the end of the top shaft the comes out of the gearbox and forms part of the selector mechanism. But I just don't understand how oil could get up so high in the box, could it splash up there? It looks like a bit of a nightmare to get to the selector mechanism to I don't want to pull it all apart change the seal and find it was in fact coming from somewhere else. :(

Here's a (bad) picture with the shaft which appears to be the source of the leak highlighted

I think its definitely coming from the selector shaft, took this pic today you can see how much oil's built up there:

I've looked through the eLearn manual and see I could change this oil seal:

It has part numbers for the the two tools to insert it but not the seal! Anyone any idea what the part number could be?

I think I should also order this gator:

to stop the new seal wearing, again there's no part number.

Thanks for the replies, I found the part number using ePER at top of the page.

It's the seal numbered six in the above link, I phoned my local garage and they said this part has now be redesigned as it kept failing. For anyone interested the new part number is 55240149 and it costs £4.57 inc vat.

The boot that covers it and that was missing on my OH's car is £12.52!

Just thought I'd give an update. I started removing the actuator, I managed with the use of a couple of tie-wraps to stop the piston popping out the clutch cylinder, which is bolted to the top of the actuator. This will hopefully mean I don't have to worry about bleeding it, which is good as I can't understand how the bleed nipple on the cylinder works as there doesn't seem to be any way of opening it (no flats to put a spanner on)

The only other problem I had it for some annoying reason the gearbox mount shares one of the actuator bolts (circled below in red)

I had to take the lower half of the mount off where it attaches to the gearbox as I didn't want to remove the battery and fuse box the get the top half of the mount off instead. So I got the actuator off and this is what it looks like on the bench

The next problem I had was according to eLearn I depress the ball and then rotate the shaft so I can knock out the pin you see in the middle of the shaft. However the shaft won't rotate regardless of the ball as one of the webs on it catches. Instead I drilled a hole in the casing wall. Which I'll thread and insert a bolt with sealant when I finished. However even after drilling this hole I can't seem to get the pin to drift out. I've given up for today, so tomorrow I think I'll have to find a larger hammer!
