Hi everyone,

The other day I was driving to a customers house, and I went over a bumpy road, and my 1.2 Stilo just started acting very strange, misfires at ANY revs, its almost like if I put the accelerator down fully it starts to judder, but if I keep it like half way up it doesn't.

I've had issues with the ignition coils in the past, I changed all the sparks about 3 months ago, so its doubtful they have gone. I've checked the condition of them and they all seem fine.

However, when I checked, it came to my attention that the hole to bolt the ignition coil to the engine has been cross threaded, and hardly has ANY thread on now at all. I cant tighten the bolt up enough to hold it securely in place, the spark plug pocket was full of oil/fuel which again isnt a good sign so I cleaned it up, but then noticed a big brown stain down the front of the engine from where the ignition coil sits. (Which I hope is oil and nothing else lol)

The ignition coil now will move up and down and rattle, probably moves up from the engine about 1mm-2mm, could this be the cause of misfires?

OBD is showing "Generic Misfire", nothing any more specific. The engine light does flash and beep constantly when I try to give it the beans, but it returns to normal when I stop accelerating.

I suppose my question is, could this loose fitting on the ignition coil be the cause of the misfires, or should I be looking somewhere else? And how the hell do I fix it with a strong enough fitting to handle the pressures of the engine, I was thinking helicoil + loctite?

Thanks,

Phil

Yes! If the thread of the locating hole isn't damaged, just buy a new bolt. If it is, then you're probably right to look at some kind of helicoil solution.

Get a tap and die set, cut larger threads into the head and fit slightly larger bolts to secure the coils

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I think its bit the bullet to be honest! On the way home from work last night it got 100 times worse, took all the sparks out on the roadside and checked them, and unplugged each coil in sequence and each one made it noticeably worse!

I'm definitely keeping the Stilo, but I've ended up impulse buying a 1.4 2001 Rover 45, Im 6ft 5 so its certainly alot easier to drive. Its only done 60k miles on the clock, 12 months MOT and got it for 450 quid.

Think I might just stick the rover engine on the back seat and somehow connect it to the Stilo, hahaha.

the coils on all the 8v fire engines from a seicento/punto will also fit just so you know.

and the bracket it bolts too can be taken off and replaced with a scrap yard part! (from a 16v. wouldnt cost you much.

ALTHOUGH you will need instant gasket to put it back on and be careful not to break the metal gasket thats in there too :). but you would get to look at the gears that make the cams spin which is always nice :p
