Gearbox/Clutch woe

hey there guys, driving along and i start to get a whine, dip the clutch and it's gone, carry on driving and the car desides to jump out of 3rd, if i hold it in place it jumps out but suddenly it's back in 3rd,

drive the car to the in-laws (3 miles away) and the whine is really bad in 5th, yet if i dip the clutch it's gone again,

does this sound like a clutch issue or box issue??

i'm gonna do a gearbox oil change tomorrow

Re: Gearbox/Clutch woe

From previous experience with minis this happens when the idler gears get worn, meaning popping out of hear when you hard on throttle and lift off suddenly.

If its the clutch your looking at about 350 for replacement, if its the gearbox too then its gonna be expensive.

Re: Gearbox/Clutch woe

Gearbox is a unit which needs quite some effort to brake it. It has to be clutch.

If you have a hole in gearbox try to look through it if something is moving and it shouldn't. I have a selespeed which has hole your should have it too.

Now I read your post again. If your third and fifth gear are worst and I look at diagram of C.514.5 gearbox 1st and 2nd are on layshaft but 3,4 and 5th are on main shaft if last three gears are causing whine you should focus on gearbox.

Assuming that you have 514.5 box.

I just renewed my clutch driven plate for 25.

Which car you have?

Re: Gearbox/Clutch woe

With no oil gearboxes don't last very long... I know I wrecked a Ford box this way completely unaware that the oil had all pished out.

Back to minis the killers of the idle gears is folk who hold a car in gear when driving. I.e. driving with hand resting on stick for miles on end. I don't know if this applies to all gear boxes but the design of a manual has got to be fairly generic.

Re: Gearbox/Clutch woe

UPDATE,

Couldn't remove the old oil due to a seized drain bolt, so topped it up (I know I shouldn't of but still......)

Took the car for a run which I knew would cause the box to whine, not a whimper out of it, so that's me a happy teddy and one quiet gearbox

Re: Gearbox/Clutch woe

No such thing as a seized drain bung eat weetabix and try again... If you still show yourself up as a weed then have more weetabix and use your Allen key but put a ring spanner onto it for more leverage... Carefull not to slip cos it REALLY hurts If you do

Re: Gearbox/Clutch woe

That sounds tight, Is it worth spraying WD40 at it.

Don't know if it will work or not.

Re: Gearbox/Clutch woe

I just hate seized stuff. I had a crankshaft bolt seized which took a 2m long extension and even then I barely undo it.

It's nice to hear that was just oil issue. What i find strange oil in gearbox is meant to last lifetime of gearbox without touching anything. So why it was missing? Maybe somebody fiddled with gearbox and also screwed that drain plug to much (just in case) which would explain seizing.

My plug was never touched and I unscrewed it with my weak hand easily.
