anyone know how easy it is? Is there any danger of dropping the diff gears into the casing? Obviously the Box will have to drained Just asking cos Ill have to get it done before MOT in Feb along with a whole host of other stuff. Building a shopping list
 
Output shaft(s) ? that would be the driveshaft oil seals. I think they're just held in retaining caps on the 1.6 gearbox. No need to touch the diff.

The left and right driveshaft seals are different sizes.
 
i know diff locks can drop in the diffs of scanias if you take the half shaft out... just wondered if i was going to do any thing similar to 'the boat'

N/S CV boot has gone so it wont be so difficult just to drop it out of the box whilst im there!

ill probably be getting the seals off of fiat just to make sure...

i am looking at the right seals arent i?

Yeah... 3 and 4 are the driveshaft seals.

There was a pair on eBay a few weeks ago that didn't sell at 99p. I was going to buy them for myself until I realised the were for the 1.6 and not my JTD. :doh:
 
There could be not main shaft seal - very often (twice in mine - twice - 1st and 2dn gearbox) there is a leak under the plate that sealing is mounted. Factory made it with o-ring seal only. You need to remove shaft and unscrew 4 screws that keeping plate with sealing ring. There you will see o-ring. Seal is cheap so you can change it with o-ring - best thing is that plate is sealing mounting so you can easy do it outside of car. Than change o-ring - use little Dirko glue to make it perfect oil keeping and mount it in the car (4 screws). Then install drive shaft and fill gearbox with new oil (remember to use oil recommended by Fiat - it sounds very like forum-asshole-mechanic-never-made-anything-but-keeps-talking but only Tutela is oil that really keep gearbox easy to use with -20deg outside).

i didnt realise there were o-rings situated between the square plates and box casing. since im having the shafts out ill be getting new seals anyway but ill add these o-rings to the list!
ill be keeping the oil when i drop it as i only changed it a couple of weeks ago! but fret not my polish counterpart it is the correct oil!

where are these o-rings? ePer doesnt list them, dealer dont seem to know about them! the only thing they list that is vaguley seal orientated are the 2 parts mentioned above.
 
Strange that ePER doesn't show them whereas eLEARN, the workshop manual, does. It describes them as gaskets, but I think eLEARN and Eper always describe "O" rings as gaskets.

It also shows the procedure for calculating the thickness of shim required to fit behind the oil seal flange, to pre-load the diff bearings. ;)

:( i cant find it on elearn i really need to practise with that :lol: why did you have to tell me about the shims :( ive seen all the shims listed and their various thicknesses!

if its not too much trouble would you be able to post a few screen shots Davren?

yet again Davren worth your weight in gold... ive had a further lok on ePER and i THINK number 15 is the elusive o-ring... ive just emailed my local asking for confirmation
 
Would this be the same on the 1.6 petrol multipla? i have the same oil leak, can anyone tell me the part number for the o ring, or the size so i can purchase one from an o ring supplier....

I wonder how Richy got on with this seal change?
It's not often I disagree with Davren, but personally I would not go down the path of changing shims to re-set the preload. Bearings wear very little and interference with them (increasing loadings) is likely to do more harm than good. I even replaced a diff once without altering those shims, and I got away with it. Certainly they should be altered if new bearings or diff are fitted, but I would never again alter them on an existing diff/bearings setup (after I got it wrong once and bearings wore out soon after).

About the Multipla question, I have no idea, but they are likely to be the same unless driveshaft diameters are different (they might be). Oil seals have dimensions written on them in tiny digits (e.g. 45x38x17.5 - that's not it, just an example), so if you can take the old one with you, you can be certain of whether the replacement is correct before you leave the parts counter.

my change went very well... checking the shims was a bit of a ballache but mine didnt need changing :D just got lucky i guess
