Hi guys, just spent out tidy sum having a new cam belt set, oil, fuel, air filter and replaced a top oil breather pipe in turbo pipes which had split. Garage disconnected battery to do works and when reconnected up pops engine management warning light - solid display!!

Plugged into the garages diagnostic kit ( they are a local independent Fiat specialist by the way) and 2 faults appeared: one said low air con and the other hi speed fan relay, We have gassed up the air con and we put a new relay in for hi speed fan, but after resetting the codes via diag' kit, they immediately reappear on start up. Other than the codes the car was runnig fine and fan was cutting in ok.
On Friday I took it on a good run in and around the city - warm day around 20C loads of sitting in traffic, stopping and starting all day long no problem, temperature rock solid at mid point of display, then we got to a roundabout and as I pulled away got a horrible clicking knocking noise from under bonnet and all of a sudden engine stopped and no oil pressure message came up managed to coast to a lay-by and engine would not turn over, recovered it to the garage and up on the ramp the engine turns over roughly 270 degrees forwards and backwards and then comes to a stop...anyone got some ideas???

In addition to the above listed works I have also replaced turbo 3 months ago, a new windscreen and 4 new tyres plus wishbones, drop ends, anti roll bar bushes and tie bar ends last week, so far have now spent c£1400.00 in last 3 months and need to be sure whether I spend anymore sorting it or just offer it up as a non runner with lots and lots of new parts

Really need some good advice here peeps:confused::cry:

much thanks Ceefox

sounds like the belt has slipped and is now locking out on open valves,

i might have a 115 JTD engine coming on the market as if i can't get my vacuum problem sorted then i'm stripping the car for parts!

It does sound like the pistons are coming into contact with the valves, that probably what the horrible clicking noises would have been before it cut out. Low oil pressure warning is one of those warnings that comes up if you stall as well.

But if it was a fiat specialist garage you'd think they's know what they were doing when fitting the timing belt???

assuming above...repairable, or not worth the hassle?

re how long engine running when it happened...about 20 seconds tops then engine stopped and we coasted to a nearby pull in luckily!

If it wasn't running for too long when it happened then it should be possible to swap in another cylinder head?

It should be fine as long as the tension is right, if there's not enough tension then the belt can slip.
how do you assess if tension is correct, as far as I am aware they fitted new pulleys etc at same time

hi Nikkiy if your engine is up for sale how much you looking for it and what yr mileage etc
cheers ceefox

Goin to be fitting all new seals to master cylinder in a couple of days if this doesn't work then I'll be looking for about 250 for the engine, 116k, New turbo fitted 6k ago,

Hi. If the car was running O.K before the new cam belt wasfitted and failed soon afterwards I would say it was down to the garage to sortit out.

My guess would be someone has forgotten to tighten the tensionerretaining bolt, it has worked loose and dropped onto the bottom pulley whichwas the clicking noise you could hear.

After bouncing about for a time it has then found its waybetween the belt and the bottom pulley and wrecked the belt and probably theengine.

The other possibility is the belt has been hand tensioned totight the tensioner has seized and thebelt has shredded again you would hear a clicking noise as the belt shredsitself.

Either way it’s down to the garage, the easiest way to tellis to take the cam belt cover off and have a look, check to see if any boltsare missing especially the tensioner one, have a look at the belt to see if hasbeen cooked.

You may not need a new engine as the pistons may well be fine, but several valves are likely to be bent in the head. This will mean taking the head off and replacing the valves. This is a big enough job though, you need to look behind the timing belt cover and see what has happened, if your cambelt is in bits - given your garage just replaced the cambelt - if it is off or broke then you must look to them to sort this out.

could be a tricky claim. Garage may say you driving away and doing X amoutn of miles proves it was fine when it left the garage BUT, Im of the opinion that it was fine BEFORE entering the garage. I would be seriously looking at them covering the cost of repairing back to the standard it was before they touched it. Seems somethign has gone wrong during the procedure, as you suggest, the tensioner not tightened properly. Those few miles you did has vibrated it loose and wack, its gone. Be prepared to go to trading standards if the garage is not helpful.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on a Renault Laguna.

The mechanic did not locate the lug on the tensioner pulley bracket correctly and it shifted after some fifty miles allowing the belt to jump teeth. Luckily the woodruff key holding the cam gear is designed to shear bending the odd couple of valve stems but saving the pistons!

They admitted responsiblity and repaired the damage.

Update been down to garage and they had cam belt cover off, as they suspected same, however, tensioner all good, tension good, cam belt looks good too from what I could see and they reckon timing makes etc all in correct position:( :( :(

next stage drop sump and look for lots of nasty metal bits
