I own a 2003 JTD 115bhp on 80k miles & do all my own servicing & repairs.
(Have recently done timing belt, all wheel bearings, front springs, alternator, rear swing arm bushes ....to mention just a few)
Anyway I'm getting a constant dull metallic vibration from the bottom of the engine - throughout the rev range when driving or idling & I had been thinking all possible things from a knackered engine mount at the good news end of the scale to big-end bearings at the severely bad news end of the scale. This was not easy to pinpoint but It turns out & very thankfully - that its just a humble worn driveshaft support bearing (the bearing at the midway point on the drivers side driveshaft which is incorporated into the R.H rear engine mount) - when I grab the drivshaft from below & hold onto it - the noise goes away completely & when I let it go again - I can see it, hear it & feel it vibrate - so I know for a fact that this is the problem.
Anyone done one of these before? - Also I hope this thread might help someone else - because you could easily throw money at this
nasty sounding vibration replacing many things before arriving at the root cause - so do let me know if any one else has came across this.
Do i replace the whole driveshaft? (seems excessive) or can I just do this bearing?
