hey guys, got my gearbox mount sorted, BUT when i took the car for a quick drive (not even 1/4 of a mile) parked up, then went to go out in the car to collect the other half, tried to start it, nothing, the starter solenoid wasn't even energizing, felt around the starter and found 1 bolt missing, tried to wiggle the starter, tried cranking it over, it started to crank then cut out, tried the same thing again and nothing,

is it just me or does this sound a possible earth issue (thinking this as i've found a loose wire on the starter just before i left the car for the night)

If a wire has come off its more likely to be the supply (live), the earth will be the starters fixing to the engine. No cables will fix to any casing or bolts in the engine bay except for earths. The starter will have an insulated terminal for its live feed. If you have a multimeter handy, set it to 20 volts dc and connect the red meter cable to the loose cable and the other meter cable (black or blue) to earth ON THE CHASSIS NOT THE BATTERY! Turn the key to try and start. If its the starter live it will show 12 volts on the meter. Then release the key as you would when the engine normally starts and it should return to zero. That will confirm its the starter live feed.

The yellow area is the loose connection

Ah thats the trigger wire from the ignition! The braided bronze cable you can see is the earth (linked to the motor casing) and the other large pin is the main feed from the battery. The trigger wire when you turn the ignition allows main battery voltage to the starter motor.

while i'm under the car sorting this out today, i'm gonna fit another earth strap which i'll bolt onto one of the starter bolts and then onto the gearbox earth mount, just to make sure i always have a good earth on there,

Ignition fuse burning out

Hey guys, still not got my stilo running, problem now is that the ignition fuse is burning out, when I removed the ignition switch wire on the starter, I reconnected the wire with a nilock nut, no connection else where but now it seems like it's shorting out, can't see anything though, anyone else had this and how did you sort it? Car is a jtd 115

Re: Ignition fuse burning out

didnt you have the starter off/alt issues a while ago or was that someone else?

you should have 2 red cables attatched to the copper threaded stud with a washer each side and a nut between the 2 cables eye terminals... nyloc's not really a good idea as the starter can get quite hot, melting the nylon and allowing the nut to spin off thats why OEM uses spring washers.

1 red cable should come from the battery and one should eff off towards the alternator.

it was someone else with starter issues, the starter is wired directly as you said, it worked fine until Friday afternoon, as I mentioned earlier, ignition switch on starter was loose, the only reason I used a nylock was to create a self locking system
