My mechanic's just been round to change my rear pads, says the caliper has sized. He has all the correct tools and knows what he's doing... but he says it's gone.

Anybody recommend somewhere cheap to get one, or has anyone in the north west area got one lying in their shed (desperation here...) REALLY broke at the moment, and the car is off the road until I can fix it, and I have to use it for work!

My mechanic is the guy who did the MOT! He said that pads were very low and needed replacing, one wheel was binding slightly. He issued advisories as he knew he'd be changing them. I watched him do it, he has all the proper tools, both rear callipers are seized. There was a little motion in them, but he could not back them of. He had the right tools, tryng to do the passenger side one anti0clockwise....

Thanks for the link, I'd already spotted them. Is it the same part for the MW as the hatch?

Yes.

Found this place - they sell on ebay but are cheaper direct (after return of old caliper)

Has anyone used these guys before?

Another question - are all the calipers for all JTDs the same? My car is an 04, and they list parts for a 2003-04 model and a 2004 on model... I've put my reg in and they still list both versions.

Carfactors have two Ebay shops, one that I listed is one of them. If I recall from 2004 the rear calipers are a Bosch unit, Have checked mine prior to posting here and mine are as well. They went to a ATE caliper from Feb 2006, so yours and mine are the same.

All sorted.. ended up costing me £100 for calipers and pads. My mechanic charged me £45 for fitting them and replacing my turbo boost valve... so I think I've done OK.

When we're talking on here about seized calipers, is it the piston that's seized in its bore or caliper unable to slide on its guide pins?

I've dismantled my sisters rear brakes today and couldn't even get the off-side to come away from the disk. The near side was also difficult, but after some brute force it eventually moved, and the caliper moves on its pins (not tackled the piston yet.
