What I was thinking as I'm going to get a debadged front grill for my black stilo and thought it would look like some completly different just by putting a square number plate. This would be on the passenger side, so where the screw on the passenger side for the current number plate would be the start of the square number plate.

If any body has done this in the past, or thinking about it or has any pictures of what it could look like, in my mind it looks good but that goes for a lot of thinsgs :L

price would be £25 so im pritty keen :) cheers all

I'm sure it could be done, but be careful if you have a JTD, as a side-mounted square number plate would block the air intake for the intercooler which is mounted behind the lower bumper...

thanks, got a 1.4 16V petrol as im 18 and insurence is robbing me of so much money its unreal, im just modifying it for now that it will not effect the insurence or increase it, once the 1st years of no clams bonus comes though im getting me an exhaust nd other bits and bobs :) once i have paid the insurance tho :'(

isn't a square number plate on the front of the car illegal. you might find your wallet being emptied by someone other than the insurance companies.
When it was posted I thought I would ask about the legality of that, but being away for so long and not getting my drivers license in UK, I thought I would look stupid to ask that? On hindisght I guess not and I think you are totally right on that.(y)

To OP and trying to forgive you chavness ;), did you actually check that it is legal?
Of course you can put on the standard plate when you MOT it and swap it afterwards but there will always be a bored copper to write you a letter asking for a donation to their next Christmas party.

You realise a debaged grill is something your insurance company kind of needs to know about or they can refuse to pay out in the event of an accident? The same goes for the exhaust and even changing the number plate to a different shape/location.

As for legality, it may have changed since but didn't Mitsubishi Evo's come with square plates on the front at one point?

i saw a lorry and a car with square plates on the front today. It may just be that i am thinking the opposite applies to motorbikes. The lettering has to be on two lines. Doesnt stop me running a smaller plate though.

Since when has removing a badge been an insurance matter? That's ridiculous - after all, some manufacturers (BMW et al) actually specify 'model designation delete' as a no-cost option.

The world's gone mad...

To be fair, I'm not sure if it applies to all insurance companies but when I was declaring mods my insurance company wanted to know about every single sticker, every badge removed, EVERYTHING.

How many people have an after market stereo and don't have it declared I wonder  Does changing a cassette deck for a cd player really mean you're more likely to cause an accident/cause more damage!?

thanks for the reply, heres the plan,

Debadge grill - it will be a debadged grill, but the badge will still be on the car, just behinded the grill so it the sun light you can still see the red fiat badge :)

Number Plate - As long as the spacing, the size and it is clear and visible it can be square, i can name a very long list of cars with square number plates mostly from the jap's or alfa's, so if i get pulled they would have to charge all of them before i pay a single penny :D

il check with my insurence company when it comes to next years insurence when i get the exhaust fitted :D :D errrm, and il post some pictures once i get the money to do it propperly

cheers all

my insurance policy states that a modification is classed as something thats not standard to the original specification of the manufacturer and OEM parts - so a debadged grill would void the insurance.

before doing any work, it might be worth a phone call. I mean, how would you feel if someone crashed into you wrecking your pride and joy and then you find out they wasnt insured as they had debadged it, or put a different exhaust on and not declared the mods?

Cars that are designed with a square number plate are type approved with it, the Stilo is not.

If you hit a pedestrian, your insurance company will use the fact that you have modified the front of the car to avoid paying.

when ever i have spoken to them, they allways say do you have any modifactions, i told them it had no badges on the back, same as my previous car and they were said the modifactions consits of things like manifold, exhaust, body kit, engin mod's and wheels. All so they couldnt charge me for alloy wheels as my previous car was a sport so it ment that as long as they were the same size it was all under the 'sport' :)

il look at talking to them, but if they want to charge me a stupid amount for stuff like the number plate, grill, exhaust and all the other bits il proberly end up swaping for a celica and going by imported rules :)

Being an aprentice mechanic one of the things we have to learn is number plates, and you should be okay with a square plate as long as its on the most outward part of the bumper, its of plastic constructions the font is right and the letters have to be a certain space apart :) so if you find a company that will do all that (really easy) then police cant touch you for it.

As for insurance my stilo (1.4) £4000 on me own or £800 on my parents (y)

yeah place down the road will do it no problemoo :) just gotta find my cars details, as of placing this on the car, i have two screw holes where the old number plate was so i can use one of them, is there a way of glueing or something to place it on the other side so one side is scewed, the other is ....

im stuck in a muddle :/

as for insurence i pay annually, well i was 17 was driving for 6 months before i decided to get a new car (the Stilo) alltogether just over 2k :'(

if he has let them know over the phone then its legally binding... He has made them aware that he is running a square plate and they have accepted to insure him... But cornish make sure you note down the time and person you talked to so that, god forbid youll need it, but your covered!
