Hi, im looking for any help or info with a problem that started on my stilo 1.9 JTD a few weeks ago & now getting worse by the day...

I 1st noticed this a few weeks ago whilst driving along it was fine but once it came to the smallest of incline in the road i got the feeling as if id taken my foot from off the accelerator just for a split second & then back on again.. as if it was misfiring..

now it seems to be doing it more often & even worse than before.. i now notice it whilst driving along on a flat road its doing the same as if im taking my foot off the accelerator & then back on again BUT you can now fair feel the car holding back before it pulls off again...

ive been told it could be the fuel filter so ive changed this over the weekend but this has had no affect what so ever & its still doing it.

anyhow after searching around it sounds like the same problem as some has posted on here BUT im not loosing total power its only for a split seccond it holds back then pulls off again...

if i boot it it pulls as good as it ever did... but does kick out a fair bit of black smoke...

:confused::confused::confused:

can anyone plz advise...
many thanks for any help..

before you go to a garage and ask them to have a look at at it, plus get ripped off the same time.

i would have a look at your turbo pipes first to see if there isnt a split pipe, its easy enough and you only have to look under the bumper buy the passenger side and the pipe is there. plus there and its usually a common problem with rubbing on the plastic.

second of all - have you ever cleaned your egr valve, its another simple thing to do and it wont cost you a penny either.

those are the common things that people would suggest.

many thanks guys for the quick reply.. im hoping its as something as simple as the EGR as it looks easy enough to do by myself... (y)

It is easy to change. But I would just clean it and get yourself one of these found HERE and blank the thing off.

why would fiat put something there if blanking it off makes it run better.? will blanking it off change the exhaust emissions as its due for the test in jan so have to get this sorted before then..

thanks again..

i have only just put a blanking plate on my jtd115 and what a big bifference it makes. better mpg and better throttle response plus for some reason my car pulls like its on steroids with it on the car.

shadeyman is the man when it comes to the blanking plate.

when i cleaned the egr valve i just sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner. its about £5 from maplins

alot of people on here pass better with the blanking plate on the car as the egr valve only gives off black smoke.

Design flaw. They have actually released a plate with Tiny Holes in which they say is better for the car.

Shadeyman is the 'Man' for info on the EGR valve.

yes there are plates with 3 little circle hole on it as i have bought one ajes ago from fiat. but just thought i would blank it off instead as everyone on here is doing it so thought i would give it a go, and with the results im having it is staying on

i have been having same problems and then this morning car simply refused to idle, it started briefly, sounded as if it was running on 2 cylinders then cut out and now won't start. Plenty of juice in battery, half a tank of petrol and a new starter motor fitted yesterday...any suggestions help????

in order to not open another thread, i am asking here:

What is the difference between those 2 blanking plates for EGR ??(of course instead of that one has 3 holes and another 2)

If your EGR is jammed open the plate with three holes will do nothing to improve the situation.
The plate with two holes will render the EGR completely redundant (best option in my opinion).
I had two JTD’s both had EGR blanked, both passed the MOT and the performance was much improved and much less smoke on hard acceleration.

Im going this route and have literally just ordered a pair of these of ebay £7.48
read a strand somewhere suggesting blanking both ends of egg

Blanking both sends is the best way to render it useless however most blank only 1 with no issues.

let us know how you get on.

hi Oakley blanking plates for egr on order but taking a back seat to knackered turbo. Local mobile mechanic arrived this morn, and after listenin to it turn over but not start we / he set about removing egr valve - tough little b***er to undo but remove it he did quite sooty so we thought we had solved it cranked the engine again still wouldnt start. so we then undid top connection of trubo boost pipe revealing butterfly coated in rathger nasty black oil with a bit of swarf in it...gulp, cranked the engine started first time, conclusion blockage in turbo pipe, remove bottom of pipe connected to turbo not good lots of wet black stuff, resigned to turbo gone west but before ordering new one going to compression test cylinders to see if swarf has got in and done any damage :(

I've never seen any figures from Fiat of what the JTD engine compression should be. It's 18:1 compression ratio so I would expect it to be about 450-500 psi for a well run in engine. It's more important that the compression for all four cylinders are within about 5-10% of each other than what the actual compression pressures are though.

You will need a dedicated diesel compression tester and possibly a puller to get the injectors out.

 after just under 12 months since having the EGR valve cleaned out its starting to do the exact same again. So now im going to have it blanked off but cant find any for sale anywhere.?

the only one on ebay i can see is this one & it looks nothing like posted earlier in this thread.

can anyone point me in the right direction to get hold of the right one.?

many thanks.
