Opened my bonnet this morning, found this disconnected - one end is a thin hose to the back of the engine, the other is a sort of coated flexible metal tube going down under the battery area. They Plug together with a sort of hollow plug...

Vacuum leak could allow unfiltered and unmetered air into the engine causing misfile, poor economy, poor emissions and eventually internal engine damage.

With it disconnected, the variable vanes of the turbo would not be operating.

Thanks. Don't know how long it had been disconnected for... I think maybe a bit of tape around it to stop it working loose again might be a good idea.

They originally had small metal clips holding them on. You sure the white plastic pipe hasn't broken off the valve and stuck in the end if the pipe?

Picture below shows mine after moving it to the side of the battery tray. (One of the metal clips is missing).

Don't think so.. I opened the bonnet, and basically there was the hose sticking there, and the pipe there, obviously they had come apart... there was a sort of hollow metal plug on the end of the pipe, that obviously fitted into the hose. I've no reason to suppose that the other end of either the hose or the pipe have become disconnected. I've never noticed the cable before, was wondering if it's usually clipped away to one side maybe?

Yeah, I'm guessing its just the connection between the hose from the engine and the less flexible pipe that had come apart.

In that case it must have pinged apart when I opened the bonnet! Car has been performing fine, and still returning 50mpg.
