Tuning BMC or K&N??

I've got a K&N Typhoon on my Abarth, very happy with it, better throttle response, no obvious loss of torque and sounds fantastic at 4000rpm!

The cone is located right at the bottom of the engine bay (with a waterproof cover fitted) so lots of nice cold air.

Paid under £200 for it, if you look on ebay you'll find them much cheaper from the U.S. but I didnt fancy importing one so I simply contacted a U.K. seller and asked if they could 'price match' which they did.

To get the best bang for your buck have the car remapped. It will deffinately give you "crisper acceleration" and "smoother response". Will also increase your BHP and sometimes, but not always, better MPG. Many places are doing generic maps for £250 some as low as £200, all are a far better upgrade than any filter. (y)

i'm not certain, but the last owner (schooweenick) did have it re-mapped to around 204BHP? theres a photo of it lurking on the forum somewhere sitting on a rolling road. i must admit i don't know much about re-mapping as i'm old school ( can't beat carbs!(y)) but i have a feeling that it might have stayed that way when he sold it? is it the sort of think you can remove? like some sort of little black box? the acceleration is pretty good just feels a little "starved" in the low revs, noticably in 2nd.

oh that is pretty good? typoons kits are what i was originally looking at but the only ones on ebay were at £300+ so was dropped because thats just too much? is yours the 2.4? whats it like at the low revs?

Remaps can be removed, its a lot easier to remove one than it is to install one as they are normally tweaked on a rolling road. No black box to remove, just alter software in the engine ECU.

If the car has been remapped on a rolling road it was tuned to make the best of the induction and exhuast systems fitted to the car at the time of the remap. If you alter either you'll mess up the remap.

If your car is producing 204bhp you have a good quality remap. My advice is don't mess it up by messing with the induction system.

oh i see?? now that IS good advice?(y) i'm not sure if it had an induction kit on it before but i think it did have and after market exhaust? i thought perhaps the 204bhp quoted was maybe with all of the upgragdes inclued hence why i was thinking of fitting an induction kit?

204bhp is good, if you significantly alter something like the exhaust, induction etc you will mess up the remap. I doubt adding a larger tube to the induction will have much of an impact, its already sucking in warm(less dense, low oxygen) air from the engine bay. Perhaps altering the one you already have so it sucks clean cold air would be a better idea. (y)

Is it worth spending £100 - £200 on another tube to find out it makes the performance worse?

Yep mine is the 2.4, feels fine at low revs with plenty of torque still.

Like I said if you search Ebay International you should see them available from the U.S. for about $280 (under £200), so you could either import one or be cheeky like me and ask a U.K. supplier to price match!
(If you do import one you run the risk of customs surcharging it which would bump the price up a bit!)
