i was a work today and the wife rang could not get the car to go into 4 or 5 Gear :bang: .
so when i got home i checked the fluids in the transmision and that seemed ok ? .

So i was going to ring my local Fiat dealer(Priory Mansfield) regarding the problem but came to the conclusion that i would just take it down and see if they could have look there and then.

I was very surprised that when i spoken to them about the fault the car was in the workshop and on the ramp in a mater of minutes.

And after 60 minutes they told me that they had repaired the fault which was a very pleasent surprise because i had a vison of a major strip down etc. :)
They tell me that the 3 and 5 gear had gone out of line and they had realined them on there PC   strange.

Well all can say is that the service was Bob on !. (y)

Has anybody else had the same problem withn the Selespeed Box.

Good heavens - a helpful Fiat dealer !

...visions of many here pounding their way to said dealer.

But seriously, on my previous Stilo Abarth I had various problems with the Selespeed box - notably the 'gearbox failure warning', which has various causes (faulty switch under brake pedal, cables needing re-routing, dirty clutch rotation sensors etc).

It did once refuse to engage any gear at all - not exactly when convenient when moving slowly in a contraflow on the A38. Had to get two people to push me into a coned-off area. Called AA and they made me a priority case due to my vehicles precarious position but in the meantime I did the 'gearbox reset trick' - ignition on and open and close the driver's door about 10 times. Did that twice and gearbox then started working, albeit awkwardly with the clutch engaging brutally.

Got it to my parents, where I was driving to and then father followed me 30 miles up the A38 to Co-Op Fiat Derby where I read the riot act to the Dealer Principal as it was the last straw with that particular car.

Upshot was that I ended up with a new one at a 'substantial' discount - fiddled by me being made a 'member of staff' and thus getting about a 30% discount of list, plus a few other odds and sods....

Pleased to say that my present one, bought in September 2004, is a world apart and 9000 miles on, not one problem.

There, that's buggered it....

No,very rarely do I come across Fiat selespeed faults...Alfas,well thats another matter!

Mine had an intermittent fault on clutch rotation speed sensor, which was cleaned (at about 5k miles!) - is there an easy way to get to this sensor, I dont fancy keep taking this back all the time if its easy to do.

I think mine is building up to another problem as I had the gearbox show same fault as it did a year ago the other day. Funny thing is it seems to provoke it by changing from 1st to 2nd while turning in hard on roundabouts - not sure why lateral force seems to affect it !?

Cheers Neil thanks for the info! (y) (y)

Have a look at an oldish post I put in about 2-3 weeks ago "dead Selespeed"
Thank god mine was still under warranty.
But shortly before this happened I couldn't start the car as it was stuck in gear. The RAC came out unpluged the battery for 15mins and bingo.... He called it a re-boot

You should still have been able to start the car in gear. I sometimes forget to put it in neutral but all you do is put your foot on the brake. :)

It wouldn't do anything, with my foot on the break or up it's ass.
I really am fond of the car but 45000 miles and a list of faults as long as your arm, £3850 of warranty work and the warranty due to run out in less than 2 months. I'm back to german car's. My last "Golf VR6" having covered 160000 miles.
It's not really a great shock Fiat are in such a lot of finantial problems. Spend a little more time and money developing the car and save a hell of a load later on with returned cars.
