MAF Mystery - 1.9 JTD

Hi All. New to forums so bare with me.
Have a 90,000 miles 53 plate Stilo JTD 80bhp, bought in 2008. 3 months ago, developed very sluggish power and Engine fault light came on.
MAF sensor is the culprit, un-plugged and power came back. Smoked a lot of the dark stuff, but at least was more responsive. Decided to get a replacement from internet.
This is my problem. The part number fitted on the MAF housing on the car is O28O 218 12O, this seems to be for 115bhp engine? I decided to get the 'proper' part O281 OO2 3O8 and just swap the sensor insert in situ. Engine fault light went out - hurrah! BUT it is still a little sluggish, especially when cold and low rev's, and a little greyish smoke when pulling off and other times. Makes you wary when pulling out at a junction.
Which is the proper part to use? Is this still the cause of the problem, or does it not matter that much. I have FiatScan software and it seems to indicate its working OK, but having the tools and knowing how to use them and interpret the data is a different matter.
Should I move on to stripping the EGR and give it a good old clean out?
Any help appreciated.

Did you fit the genuine Bosch part?

I replaced a MAF with a repro part (half the Bosch price) some time back and it smoked even worse than the unit I had replaced. I returned it and got the Bosch item and all was well again

What peat says is correct there are alot of cheap copies out there and i was researching mafs recently and the 120 is for the mjet and the 308 is for the jtd so i think you are right in that respect. Shop4parts are doing an aftermarket 1 for 35 and the bosch one is 115 is there after market one a cheap copy or is it a decent alternative.

You say its still a little sluggish do you get full power when its removed. Other issues that can make it sluggish is the egr been dirty or the need for a new air filter.

Re: MAF Mystery - 1.9 JTD

Got the spare from World Car Parts. Looks like the real deal Bosch. Lord knows what that MJet part was doing on it, least I know what it is. Hopefully ECU is getting all the correct signal levels. Making an assumption, its signal levels are roughly comparable. Just a little worried that for whatever knows FIAT reason, my stilo has to have that particular "wrong" MAF sensor to work properly.
With the original ''gone faulty'' MAF power was naf. With no MAF, sort of OK but had 007 smoke screen get way at lights (not quite, but pedestrians got a lung full). Seems less smoke with new MAF plugged in, but seems sluggish when from cold. Struggles at junctions, and make small prayers when its busy.

But been spannering today. Stripped the EGR off, fully bunged up. Loads of carb cleaner later and now it doesn't jam. Was worried that the EGR solenoid is knackered (seemed very pathetic action), but don't think I was testing properly as found Argonought post about what to do. If I get time next week, i'll take the solenoid off and follow his advice for proper testing. But as is now, it still doesn't seem right, still some smoke but will test low rev power when cold on the way to work on Monday.
I'm still of the mind I'm smarter than a Stilo and it won't outwit me, just need a thousand man hours and a thousand spanners.
