Hey,

Anyone heard about "Diesel Performance UK"? Saw an ad for it and wondered if anyone had any feedback or if anyone was also interested like me? They do a tuning box for about £280, which is self-install and comes with 3 year warranty. It is completely removable meaning no potential MOT fails...

Figures show a remap on my Multijet 150 would give about 174bhp  (not to mention 260lb/ft torque up from 225).

Site is http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/fiat-diesel-tuning.html (this is the FIAT-specific page). Let me know of your thoughts, I'm definitely considering one!

Errr why did I not know about this! I think I did actually from a thread before...but I forgot...

To be honest, I think I'm gonna do this instead, purely based on the fact its £200 cheaper?

Do you get better economy out of yours too though? I need a balance...I'll be doing a fair few miles after summer...oh and any change to service intervals?

I've not seen better economy but its not bad either. The boxes have 8 settings just choose the one that works best for you. Mine just went through its MOT with it installed, box could be easily seen, it wasnt hiden, passed the emmission test with flying colours.

Might give one of these a go then! Nothing to lose really as the cost is a lot lower...fairly easy to install I take it? Just a case of removing engine cover I guess right on a Stilo?

And did you declare on insurance? ;)

Edit: Just seen http://www.dynamicdiesels.co.uk/ this looks like a direct copy of the site you gave? Weird...

Yes its easy to install, a bit tight if like me you have large hands. I asked the missus to plug it in. ;)

Told our insurance, they knew exactly what it was and charged us an extra £10 a month initially but for some reason as of 2011 they dont charge anything extra.

Haha ok I'll bear it in mind, hopefully my hands will be small enough!!

Insurance might kill me a bit, so will have to consider this (seeing as I'm young too I'll probably get torn a new one if I'm not careful). Hopefully they will just say its OK and no more to pay! Thanks :)

I'll let you know the result of mine when I get one...I won't be fitting it until the end of May though I doubt. But will defo make a difference at 180bhp!!

had a dtuk green box on my car a few years now no complaints but i can understand people buying the £90 box's.
as i understand them (digital boxs) they are pre loaded with a map or several maps or an adjustable map, this map is an offset amount to interupt the feedback from fuel rail pressure sensor. the signal from the rail sensor is reduced and fed on to the ecu this leads the ecu to increase fuel rail pressure to what it thinks it should be but is now actually higher.i believe they all do a similar job but the amount of increase and internal maps are going to be different.
im sure someone on here was selling similar boxs.
if driven with vigour no mpg increase
if driven like a granny maybe mpg increase(hard to do)
be prepared for possible clutch slipping if turned up to high(most boxs ive seen for stilo limit torque to 350nm)
on a rr from last year i got 178.7bhp and 254 ft/lbs (344nm) i think these may be on low side to other rr figures as the losses were only 12.1hp have seen many rr graphs showing 20-30bhp losses
i did not have the box turned up max, if turned up too high you will waste fuel, see black smoke, increase soot which will not help egr issues or swirl flap issues.and if you go too high will put car into limp with fuel pressure deviation too high which i think can be cleared with can tool or several clean restarts.

Worth surfing the net on this. Lots of comments out there on boxes.

Tuning boxes just fool the engine into over-fuelling, which can result in a lot more smoke. Whereas a proper re-map will recalibrate the ECU and associated functions like turbo boost.

But in the end you pays your money and makes your choice...

Seems like the only viable option though considering the MOT issues that ECU remaps will have by the end of the year (assuming it happens) ?

You may be right, but I understood the better re-mappers had devised a method some time ago to 'hide' the remap from anyone poking about in the ECU. And what about manufacturer's regular upgrades to maps which are happening all the time?

Maps are just stored data, reading that data and comparing it to the standard Map data wouldn't difficult.

I really dont see how the data can be hidden?

Having done a bit of research, I think it's very unlikely a re-map will be detected. The European Directive that introduces these changes:

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2010:173:0047:0072:EN:PDF

at 6.1.9 where it covers 'Control unit illegally modified' or 'illegal engine modification' are both only subject to 'Visual Inspection' only. There's no way you'd detect a re-map on visual examination. And I very much doubt they'll want MOT testers connecting up to diagnostic ports, because of the possiblity of 'what have you done to my engine?' allegations when a warning light comes on shortly after the test.

However, a tuning box left in place most definitely would be visible...

And finally, looking at the VOSA consultation on the matter:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/publicat...rch/consultationpapers/consultationpapers.htm

it seems they have decided not to implement the changes which would have outlawed re-maps. Which doesn't surprise me, because there would have been an outcry from the aftermarket industry if they had.

It'd be a simple as plugging in to the OBD and having some sort of scanning software based on make, model and version (trim) of the car to detect any non-standard ECU maps. Not difficult, I could write the software myself probably ;)

But yeah, I hope they won't be looking at these...a visual check would certainly suggest tuning boxes may be ruled out, but for 10 mins fuss it could easily be disconnected pre-MOT and re-fitted afterwards...

My Grande Punto MJet had a Red Dot re-map on it to 194 Bhp with 260 ft lbs of torque & passed the MoT without questions being asked, no problem as long as the car doesnt blow smoke out like an old steamship.

But as the car is now no longer mine I'm glad to say I dont have to worry about Map / Tuning box legislation.

Remap would be the preferred option I guess but its permanent and you can't remove it if you needed to (without organising it with the remappers first)...

@Shadey - do you get any worse mpg out of yours in exchange for better performance? Its too good to be true surely that boxes give better performance and use less fuel?

If you get seduced by the power & constantly use the new power released by the re-map it will use more fuel. Fact.

What I found was that my trip computer lied a bit... being 3 - 4 MPG optimistic, but I can say, that driven normally & exploiting the extra grunt appropriately the fuel consumption wasn't harmed too much using the brim-to-brim method. It's not magic. But it is a bit awesome lol!
