Has anyone had to change either their brake pads or discs?
how long should pads and discs last. I know it depends on how you drive!!!!

I have about 6mm pad wear left (on all 4 corners) and have done 30,000 miles - do they need replacing????
Also should you just wait until the pad sensor tells you to change them, or is this another useless piece of FIAT electronic that should't be trusted?????

Thanks

Check your service manual it should have a section on brakes. I believe the average mileage for disk & pad replacement is about 40,000 miles hope that helps.

I was told by the dealer, after my 12k service, that i would need new pads and discs for the front. 18k miles now and still not changed them, but when i look at them, they look ok, the good old measure it with your thumb nail routine, works ok?! might leave it till i get to 20k in a month or so and then have them looked at again.

I had to change my front pads and discs when i bought the car, cos the brakes were low and the discs were warped. However that a was on 33k miles! I had the rear brakes changed on my car on about 39k miles.

12k is silly for the brakes and pads to be changed!! Unless you race around in your car!

By the way i got the warning sensor when my front brakes were low, for me it wasn't enough warning as there was only about 500 miles left. But for people who do low mileage it will be fine. But i on average pop that off in one weekend!

Beware, changing the rear pads is a nightmare, the caliper doesn't just push in, it need winding it. With the lack of fiat tool I ended up removing the whole caliper, grinding a spaner to fit the plunger recess and applying great pressure while winding in.

Fronts are easier, dont wait for the light on either, you could go to bare metal and never see it.

The only way to really know if they need replacing is by the feel of them. If they dont feel like they are biting as well replace them.

front or rear pads are about £20 from partco.

FYI my rear pads went at 50,000 fronts are due replacing agian at 64,000. (3 door Abarth)

I'd expect to change front pads every 14-16000 miles depending on the disk ware. Disks will happily cover over 60000 on the front, and more on the rear. Read pads expect to have to change 20K Miles, but this depends on the break bias. Careful driving will mean they last longer, and boy racer antics will cause premature ware.

Dont need Fiat tool, snap on/Mac tools do a universal one for about tenner, fits on 3/8" socket, kinda cubed shaped with different fitting lugs for different piston sizes.....quite handy thing to be honest ;)

Just another thing about the rear brakes...as i watched cringing as someone replaced mine. Cos Fiat in the infinate wisdom went against the norm. :bang:

As Braden said the rear ones need to be twisted when pushing in, but they switched the threading on the otherside of the car. So its not ur usual threading on the left hand side of your car!!

I will invest in one.

finally got yourself some claws eh stilo boy, dont tell me cost you 50 quid off ebay but cant afford to tyre and fit them, you scotts are all the same

1.6 dinamic 17"claws steel grey the ******

I've had Claws since November! :p £50 for Claws on ebay, yeah right! Mine are brand new, still in their Fiat packaging! Not fitted yet as i couldn't justify binning perfectly decent tyres on the 15" steelies. And i have standard as to which type of tyre i'm gonna fit to my Claws!

I'll probably end up waiting another 5k miles before i change my wheels, sadly.... 'cos i've got a wheel bearing to pay for, for my mini, and a service will be due on the Stilo by then too.
