re: Brake & Number Plate Light problems

My right brake light had a habit of blowing. I think I'm now on the fourth in 14 months.

However, when I last changed it I gave the whole area - bulb fitting and tracks - a good blast of contact cleaner. No problems since then and it's been a few months now. Might just be a concidence but it could be worth a try.

Thats alright rich! i gather the repetition of topics drives you spare! Well the last time i changed the brake light on the driver side i also changed the indicator and the other red light all at the same time to be on the safe side. I do have some contact cleaner from when i was having a go with the D4 connector so ill give it a go and see what happens. Just to clarify, what do you mean by 'tracks'?

Thanks
Kieran

re: Brake & Number Plate Light problems

There actually is an uprated wiring loom available from FIAT to stop blown bulbs, had this fitted to mine as I went through a few headlights.

This may just be a headlight problem because like I said it was only my headlights that were blowing.

If you have any problems with your dealer not being able to find it the service bulletin number is 55.09.04 :)

I second that, i went though untold amount of bulbs on my car and fiat eventually changed the wiring loom, this is only for the headlights though....
As for the brake lights i would look at the earth and make sure its good and clean, get a multimeter to it and also check the resistance on the earth. If its high run a fresh one. Ive never had to (touch wood) so far change any of my rear lights in the 4 1/2 years of ownership, untold amount of headlights, brake pads, and gearbox but no rear bulbs lol.

re: Brake & Number Plate Light problems

dan, Kieran said it was rear lights - one to remember about the front though.

Kieran, when you change the bulb, the tracks are the metal connections from the connector to the bulb. Make sure contact points are clean and solid - I bent the centre pin up on our 5dr's rear foglights as the connection was terrible, and we had "Rear Foglight Failure" and repeated blowing bulbs - sorted it out a treat :D.

Just the same with my number plate light. The warning light would come on but if I opened the door and closed it again more often than not the warning light would go out.

A little spray of contact cleaner and bent contacts did the trick.

Smashing.

re: Brake & Number Plate Light problems

I couldn't remember if it was just the fronts or the rears, thanks for clearing it up :)

I had to change one of my rear lights once and it looks like water had got in there at some point as it was pretty rusted up.
