Recently purchased an 04 Stilo 1.9 JTD (115) 3door.

Pleased as anything with it but i can't help but think my mpg should be better than it is. I drive about 50/50, town/motorway and am averaging not much over 35 mpg. On a run to uni and back (60 mile round trip) and get 44 ish doing 75 ish miles per hour.

Sometimes however (using the instant consumption on the trip computer) when i maintain 75 on the motorway it will be around 55, whereas other days it will be 40ish (driving exactly the same, same conditions all round).

My question is basically:
What are the main/simple checks that can be done to find anything that could be dragging the mpg down, or simply what things can i check to get better MPG?

Cheers, Zack

Hi,
I own a JTD MW and on a run get about 50ish, around town low to mid 40,s
One thing to check is are your brakes free ie not binding?
How long since the filters and oil changed? and how long since serviced?
What is your driving style ? do you floor it to get up to speed and then ease off the gas?

Cheers for now,

I havent checked the brakes atall, will have to as when i brought it the brakes seemed abit 'off', but have got better since ive been driving it daily.
Woudlnt know when the oil or filters have been changed but i guess its a pretty basic thing to do, ill have to do that for sure.

My driving style is i would say 6/10 on the ragging it scale. Every so often i have a burst of speed, but mainly i drive 'normally' not trying to be economical but not speeding around everywhere.

You can't rely on moment by moment readouts from the dash - drive a thousand miles and then look at the average. 45-55mpg is normal.

Might be worth checking the MAF.

If fuel consumption is much the same with it disconnected (should be worse) then it could be suspect.

Any heater plug errors ?

No no no, i leave the trip computer on, and it averages around 35 over say 250-300 miles. I just used the instant consumption to have a rough readout of my mpg whilst i was doing 75 on the motorway.

@Argonought, nope there are no errors atall. I will check with the MAF sensor detached and see what happens to the mpg.

@Yellow Peril, yep seems like thats definitely something i'll have to check
