Over the last week or so my 1.6 Active has developed a really squeaky belt which from a cold start sounds like a pair of cats fighting but after about 10 minutes it is as quiet as a mouse - is this a standard feature on the Stilo or is something not right?

I know the car had only done 6 miles in 6 months when I bought it so wonder if it is anything to do with it sitting around for so long.

My car developed a squeak within a few weeks of ownership. I took it into the dealer, they said they lubricated a few points and indeed the squeak stopped. But it has started to re-appear. Usually at idle and always as I turn the engine off.

I bought them from the Fiat dealer when I picked up the car. I managed to negotiate a 15% discount at the time :D

Well I'm finally going to get my first taste of vehicle mechanics Fiat style as my dealer has finally agreed to book the car in to investigate the squeak!

Hi Purplemonday,
I assume you are talking about the belt under the bonnet, if so it means that some oil, water or it is just loose, the cure for the problem is to check and tighten up your drive belt. As a temporary measure, you can buy stuff that you spray on the belt that makes it sticky and therefore grips your bits.
Hope this helps.

Cliff,

Those were my first thoughts but no obvious signs of any of them.

Took the car back to the dealer a couple of weeks ago and they said the belts were a bit on the tight side and squirted them with some magic gunk which shut them up for a couple of days but things are now worse than they were before!

Hopefully it will get sorted out as it's quite embarrassing when you're sat at the traffic lights with people staring at the car trying to work out what the noise is...

Without wanting to speak too soon, it looks like my Stilo has actually spent a day at a FIAT dealership and they managed to fix the problem!!!

It would seem that the cause of the noisy belt was the cambelt tensioner being incorrectly adjusted - not bad considering the car allegedly had a full inspection before I picked it up!

Anyway, tomorrow morning will be the real test as the belt is always at it's noisiest in the mornings so if it's all silent I will be happy - if not I'll be driving straight back to the dealer.
