stilo with big problems help needed

Fiat Stilo with big problems help needed, it is a bit of a long story so bear with me. car dropped a cam belt, removed head found it in uneconomical repair, so installed 2nd hand engine. previous to this the map wires had burnt through on the exhaust, now 2nd hand engine fit, nothing but trouble, running lumpy on idle after warmed up runs perfect cold? cleaned throttle body out to no avale, doesnt seem to be a signal to the black wire on lamber sensor pre cator post cat, could it possibly be a ECU problem. thank you

Re: stilo with big problems help needed

What engine is it?
Have you repaired the MAP sensor and inlet air temp wiring?
There is no signal from the ECU to the lambda sensors, the signal voltage comes FROM the lambda sensors once they're hot enough

Are you sure the newer engine cambelt is synchronised correctly for crank to camshaft timings?

Re: stilo with big problems help needed

Hi Decks, I hold you in great esteem, having read some of the posts, this engine actually came out of a perfect running car along with all wiring looms. I fit my old ECU onto this engine....where do I go from here as I am used to plugs, points and condensers?
Thanks for your speedy reply,
Rob

Re: stilo with big problems help needed

What engine is it?
Do you have diagnostics capability for checking engine running data so you can see what's going on?
Is it original engine lambda sensors in there? What voltage signals are coming out of pre cat lambda on black signal wire? I'd be looking for oscillating 0.15v- 0.85v every sec at hot idle

Have you checked the obvious, like plug gaps? (Sorry, have to ask)
Have you tried removing coil connectors one at a time to see if one cylinder coil is causing problems?
Have you tested pre cat lambda sensor heater wiring for continuity?
Does the engine otherwise run absolutely fine above idle rpm?

Re: stilo with big problems help needed

There should be useful to do "Self adaptation reset" in FES, because old ECU was moved to "new" engine. Maybe also "Phonic wheel reset" (both for 1,6 petrol engine).
But maybe problem is in damaged cables during engine exchange... Are there some faulty codes in FES?

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Only fault code I got up on the dash was the fuel sensor?
Cheers

Re: stilo with big problems help needed

as already said bud best thing to do would be get all the wiring repaired and then start from there... then grab yourself a half decent ELM327 lead and a free copy of FES engine code reading and reseting is free and you can monitor all the sensors to really see what's going on as soo many members will tell you FES is an absolute godsend for diagnostics on these!

Re: stilo with big problems help needed

Ok fuel level sensor fault is most likely simply because you have low fuel state and a low voltage battery

Is that 16mpg ? Mind you it's going to be low if you're not going anywhere but if that's from normal driving around then there's a huge over fuelling and that's likely to be MAP sensor, it's manifold inlet air temp or precat lambda sensor
I've seen massive over fuelling when the inlet air temp sensor was broken so check your wiring
Is the exhaust all ok with no blowing?

If you can hook up running diagnostics and see what MAP and inlet temps are being recorded along with lambda readings then you'll see what's happening

Re: stilo with big problems help needed

Hi am going to invest in some diagnostics. good advice. I was driving about getting 16 to gallon! Map sensor is new, but disconnect it when running, engine cuts dead.Where is air inlet temp? Should the lambda have a supply to it? And exhaust has a very slight blow where pipe joins cat at bottom cheers Rob.
