So..... i have a 52plate stilo 3door 1.6 16v, problem begins with a non starting engine so i charge battery(also buy new battery and try this also) turns out no problems with battery being charged(by alternator) or holding a charge (all this checked with voltmeter).
Car and engine make all the 'encouraging' noises that lead to "broom" "broom" but it seems something electrical is preventing this.
This led me to search the net and hear i am now...... I am convinced it is a problem of the temperature? As when really cold=no start and when warm=start !!? the car is kept at the roadside.
At the moment i am push starting(which works every time, but now there is an 'oil pressure sensor fault' warning light) every morning, after i have started the engine/car this way and completed my journey then turned off and parked up i can then start the car by normal ignition all day long. But when i leave it overnight in the cold it will not start!

Please help:confused:cheers.

I had the car checked over buy the garage who said the starter motor, spark plugs were fine and there were no engine management fault codes. plus they said the engine/car started fine every morning for three days after being left for 24hours but the car was kept inside away from the cold.

My next step is to go to fiat garage, however they want £100(plus tax!) for diagnostics before they even start.

I would check value of coolant temperature sensor and inlet air temperature sensor on diagnostic.
I'm not sure, if there is the problem, but it must be clear if these sensors are ok or not.
You can do it by yourself (free version of FiatEcuScan + KKL cable from ebay = 8 euro).

For symptoms of good battery and starter speed but no ignition at all- temperature related but no fault codes I'd go for too big a gap at the rpm sensor

If it can't sense the engine turning or piston position then it won't allow ignition.
Why no fault codes? Because there's nothing wrong with the rpm sensor, it's waiting for the engine to start turning but is just a little too far away to see that it is.

A gap about the thickness of a business card is good. Slacken the bolt and lever it in on the pivot

Deckchair5: Did you test out, that there is no faulty message when there is a big gap at rpm sensor? Imho ECU should see non-coherency between signal from rpm sensor and valve shaft sensor?

Fault P0016 is about crankshaft and camshaft coherency, but maybe it is only about running engine, not about to start.

Yes, I had a similar fault on my Stilo of unreliable starting with no fault code. Since adjusting the gap closer it has started first time everytime. 10min job and an instant cure for me
