Technical 1.6 16v - 57i kit worth while?

Well.................................

initially you get an increase in accelaration, that soon disappears, or perhaps you get used to it, no noise difference whatsoever, due to where the air box is located and soundproofing and reduced fuel economy, mines being removed at it's next service!
 
I cant believe you dont get a sound increase from fitting one! Even my 1.2 sort of growls. With the windows down can you still not hear it?

The 57i kit should make the car feel more responsive with a good feed of cold air and if driven normally shouldnt affect mpg- if you're gonna cane it everywhere obviously it will, as it does with a standard engine!!
 
twincamms didnt you just get a panel filter from k&n?
there is a noise difference with a 57i just not overly loud due to sound proofing (unless you have windows down or floor it).not noticed any change (for better OR worse) in my fuel economy either.
but like stiloboy says there is a increase in your insurance premium,but if you are looking to do a couple of things to your motor it wont matter as most allow you about 5 mods for roughly the same rate as one.

but doesn't the ECU 'learn' over a period of time and when it realises that the air filter has been changed it readjusts the intake settings to optimise it as close to factory as possible, that's why you feel an immediate effect on performance then it drops off, at least that's what I've been told anyway ???
 
i have an induction kit fitted to my 1.6 dynamic and it sounds awesome!!
i need an exhaust though thats loosing loads of power
 
As you may already know, I have a BMC CDA on my 2.4 - I can't say it has the K&N sound, but from about 4000rpm there is a roar and deffo an increase in power can be felt.

Trouble is, it is remembering what the car felt like before it was added, lol....

If you do anything that is likely to affect the mixture - e.g. resistor mods or raised fuel pressure then this is absolutely true. The advantage with a good filter is increased air flow into the engine as it poses less restriction than a standard paper filter. The ecu will pick up on the increased air flow and alter the fuelling to match, and if you drive sensibly (whatever that means, heard it somewhere :) ) you may get more mpg.
You will probably gain 3-4bhp max and some torque if it has a good cold air feed. A panel filter in the standard air box will provide almost as much gain for less £ and you don't need to tell the insurance about it.

Well you wont hear any difference in noise if its just a K&N panel filter or notice that much in performance.

Ive seen a graph for an MGF VVC beofre and after a K&N was fitted, there was a 10-15bhp increase!! Id post a link but cant find it anymore :bang: It probably wont make as much of a difference as that on a Stilo, but it must do something.

Also if you disconnect the battery and leave it overnight the ECU will reset itself. When you go out for a drive it will learn all the new settings with the K&N fitted.....
 
Fixitagain, your thinking old school. Old cars get a performance increase when you fit a K&N, because you have to change the needle/spring combination in the carb, and you DO get an increase.

Modern cars, nae hope! I've seen no conculsive evidence to suggest fitting a K&N increases BHP. And definately not the 10% touted loosely by folk that buy K&N filters, just 'cos it says so on the box!

Increasing breating on one side of the engine and not the other should see very little difference in a modern car. Intake is only part of the story....

Spend £50+ for more sounds, and a K&N sticker for your cam cover or back windscreen, or spend £200 and get a re-map and have a garaunteed increase, but crucially no sticker..... :p

No, not at all old skool. Carb engined cars may run weak and offer less power with a free flow filter if not rejetted as it'll have more air but no more fuel. Given the correct jetting it will be an improvement.
An engine with a lambda sensor fitted will adjust the fuelling to keep the right mix going, if you've got more air going in it'll add more fuel and give more power. This is effectively an electronic 'rejet'.

What you will find with a panel filter or induction kit is that the throttle response will feel much sharper too - this is from experience on several different injected cars.

Intake is indeed only one part of the story, but riddle me this Batman: On 4 cylinder 12 valve cars there are 2 intake and one exhaust valve - if exhaust were more important it'd be t'other way around, surely?

The induction kit or panel filter will work well when combined with a proper exhaust, but it will also offer gains on it's own. Ask Polecat with his Marea - he's tried panel filter with standard and modded zorst.

Is this correct? Will it be beneficial to do this? Or has WFP been at the Sherry again?

When I had the remap and CDA, the ECU was disconnected - when I drove it away, Nige said to me 'give it as much welly as you dare' [or similar], just so the ECU could relearn all the settings at its best :) - has to be worth a try, surely....
