Have seen loads of threads about a 'whooshing' sound... can anyone tell me exactly where I need to look for this intercooler hose to check if its split?

The inter cooler (item #1 in the diagram) is in front of the left front wheel, You need to remove the wheel arch liner to access it. The inter cooler is not fitted to 80bhp JTDs.

I've never had the whooshing sound so don't know which hose or pipe it usually is.

There are 2 in there, and I beleive it the rubbery one that would normally be the culpret. I have the whooshing sound too (and loss of power) and have never found a split to this day.

The split is where it's in contact with the bodywork, and is caused by abrasion, so I'd have a look on that basis.

I've yet to have an issue with this so can't really comment further.

Mine does look quite bobbly but not 'split' per say. Might be worth chaging anyway?? Its full of oil though i'll tell you that much.

ive had a question about this pipe for a while. The outside of mine is quite dirty, covered in sooty oily residue, is this normall? has it just been a result of oily air being expelled from the overboost valve?

I dont like the fact its quite a wobbly pipe, may be an idea to change it for a silicone pipe....

I'm thinking exactly the same thing, will await someone with more knowledge on the subject though.

Also, Stu.

Just had one fitted, its the bigger one of the two shown in the above thumbnail and it was caused by abrasion as per Argonaughts comment. Cost here in Spain 80 plus euros. The oily deposit on the outside is normal. The whooshing sound is quite apparent and not mistakable.

Hey I managed to find the break in my intercooler pipe,
the bit I need to replace is the small rubber 90 degree joint that's between parts numbers 3 and 6 in the above diagram in post #2.
Does anybody know where I could get one and the jubilee clips that go either side of it?

Thanks

Not Really at this stage, its temporarily half repaired with tape, (it sort of works, stops the smoking and brings performance back to close to normal!).

Anyone know what diameter the pipe is if I wanted to fit an aftermarket elbow joint?

or

Anyone know where I could get the whole pipe, the one that the arrow points to in the diagram, for a good price, the best I have done so far is about £70+VAT?

Thanks

Hmmm.... trouble with the Ebay link is that it's normally not the turbo end that splits! Usually the rubber section that connects the turbo to the metal pipe is fine but at the bottom end of the metal pipe is another rubber pipe that turns 45 deg in one plane then 90 deg. in another plane to connect to the intercooler. This pipe vibrates against the plastic inner wheelarch liner & eventually wears through with a resultant whooshing noise.
It's a bugger to replace with straight silicone pipe, because the two bends cause the tube to kink. FIAT only sell the whole caboodle of two rubber & one metal pipe as a single assembly costing around £90. Having failed with a tape repair ( needs to hold 1 bar of turbo pressure) & a silicon pipe, I bit the bullet & bought the FIAT part.
When fitting a new elbow, I fixed some split washing machine waste pipe hose to the edge of the wheelarch liner to prevent any future problems - so far (12 months ) it seems to be fine.
I didn't fancy just cutting the whelarch liner to clear the pipe comfortably, since Stilos are reputedly very touchy about water ingress to connectors & fuses near the battery.

New on here so please bear with me if similar answer already posted but thought I would share my experience to help others and put others minds to rest as I thought this was going to be an expensive fix/major problem and it wasn't.

3 weeks in to Multiwagon ownership, (2nd Fiat in our family joining our 07 Plate Panda Active 1.1) and I started hearing the whoosing sound. 1.9 jtd 8v, my 1st diesel engined car (after much research jtd seemed most reliable engine). I wasn't sure what this sound was and drove 150 odd miles mainly motorway without issue until the engine management kicked in and put me in to limp home mode, while in the fast lane of the M5 = not good.

Recovery mechanic at roadside found split intercooler hose - he taped it up but it blew off. So, he cancelled error code and I drove on without issue, another 150 odd miles but keeping revs down and max speed of 70mph. Lot of black smoke in lower gears. Quoted £90 for part and £100 for genuine fiat part. Took back to garage bought car from 3 weeks ago and repaired under warranty free of charge of course. Is now driving fine and I really appreciate having full use of the turbo back again!

Glad you started this thread as i'm about to search for it,i had the same problem which happen to me last saturday when i was in a toll higway, was running like 120km/hr when suddenly my car lost its power and suddenly you would hear a very noisy whoosing sound every time you press the gas pedal, what happen was the rubber hose was disconnected underneath, the metal clip that's holding it suddenly went lose, got me into trouble as i am 10 kms away from the nearest car repair shop and i need to climb up a hill, thick black smoke all over the place that looks like my car is about to explode,i did'nt gamble,i stop and call my insurance assistance and tow my car,i wonder though if i can double that clip to be sure it won't slip again.
